Discover Lóndrangar - the Rocky Castle in Snæfellsnes

Because we don’t have any castles in Iceland, mother nature decided to make one for us. Seeing from a distance, Lóndrangar looks like a huge castle reaching out to the sea. Lóndrangar are uniquely formed basalt volcanic dykes sticking out from the ocean and are the remains of a crater, which has been eroded to its present form by the sea. Lóndrangar consists of two pillars or stacks, one of 75m and the other one of 61m. They are located on the southern part of Snæfellsnes peninsula in west Iceland.

If you are surfing around Snæfellsnes, you won't miss those majestic sea stacks. They are really impressive reaching out surrounded by rough lava covered with green soft moss that looks like a green carpet. I recommend you take a little walk once you are there and go to the left from the parking place where the sign says “Þúfubjarg”. It's not a long walk and once you are there you will sense the magnificent power of nature. The cliffs are high and steep and when looking down the only thing you see are wild waves smashing on the rocks down there along with the squawking birds. Both puffins and fulmars nest there.

From this point of view, you can really enjoy the Lóndrangar sea stacks and the rough nature around it. If you want to explore the dykes further and get closer, it is also a possibility because you can walk down from the parking place and follow one of the trails on the right side. From there you can walk all the way up to Lóndrangar and even all the way down to the rocky pebble beach. This place is one of those places that makes you feel a bit small against the power of nature, also because of the nearness of the Snæfellsjökull glacier.

As with almost every special place in Iceland, we do have stories to tell and for this special area I can tell you that the farmers there never made or make hay on the hill,  because it's said to belong to the elves living in the area and of course we don’t want to disturb the elves. They are our friends, right!
