Hidden away from the road in the beautiful Berufjörður in East Iceland is a turquoise rock called Blábjörg or Blue Cliffs. Blábjörg cliffs are by the sea along Ring Road 1, but most people are unaware of them and pass them by. In this travel blog, I want to tell you why a gorge with a row of beautiful cascades in Skagafjörður, North Iceland, is called Bólugil ravine. And also why a peculiar rock close by is called Skeljungssteinn rock. These stories, which are supposed to have taken place around the settlement of Iceland, are told in Icelandic folklore. Ármann was related to Bárður Snæfellsás, the protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, about whom I have written another travel blog. Kerið in Grímsnes is a quite impressive, oval-shaped volcanic crater filled with a lake, formed during a volcanic eruption some 6,500 years ago. Folklore is connected to the lake in the crater, which tells of a water kelpie living there.
