Vitaleiðin - Follow the Lighthouse Trail of the South Coast of Iceland

In this travel blog, we will go on a treasure hunt and check out Vitaleiðin - the South Coast Lighthouse Trail, which includes lighthouses on the South Coast and many other interesting stops.  We will also pass through 3 lovely villages on the South Coast, Stokkseyri, Eyrarbakki, and Þorlákshöfn. There are only 3 lighthouses here on the South Coast Lighthouse Trail, as the south coast has very few harbours from Stokkseyri to Höfn in Hornafjörður, which is a long coastline with no harbours. The Westman Islands, on the other hand, have a good harbour. Top photo: The official Map of the South

Sænautasel Turf House in the Highland of Iceland

In my search for turf houses around Iceland, I visited the lovely little turf house Sænautasel, which is a rebuilt turf house on Jökuldalsheiði heath in the highland of Iceland. It is, in my opinion, a charming turf house, built from scratch from the remains of an earlier turf house. Top photo: at Sænautasel Sænautasel turf house Sænautasel dates back to 1843, and for 95-100 years, people lived in such a turf house until 1943, when the last people moved out.    From 1841 until 1862, with an increasing population and demand for land to build on, sixteen turf houses were built on the hea

The Folklore of Krýsa and Herdís & a Hike on Stóra-Eldborg & Litla-Eldborg

In this travel blog, I want to tell you about the burial mounds of Krýsa and Herdís, who are believed to have given their names to Krýsuvík and Herdísarvík on the Reykjanes peninsula. Icelandic folklore tells of these two quarrelling women. I also want to show you the two Eldborg craters, Stóra-Eldborg and Litla-Eldborg, which are close by. Húshólmi - a Hike to the Ancient Ruins in the middle of Ögmundarhraun Lava Field

Those of you who have read my travel blogs know that I look for Viking ruins and burial mounds all over Iceland. In this travel blog, I want to show you the ruins I found in the middle of a lava field on the Reykjanes Peninsula: Húshólmi and Kirkjulágar. At Húshólmi, you will find the ruins of a church and longhouses. These ruins are surrounded by the Ögmundarhraun lava field, and we have no idea who lived there. The colourful Sogin - Litlu Landmannalaugar on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Most visitors to Iceland have heard about Landmannalaugar, the Pearl of the Central Highland of Iceland.  But have you heard about the miniature version of Landmannalaugar: Sogin on the Reykjanes peninsula? It is sometimes referred to as Litlu Landmannalaugar = the Little Landmannalaugar, and is a hidden pearl on the Reykjanes peninsula, a UNESCO Geosite. I visited Sogin a couple of years ago and fell in love with this beautiful place. Top photo: hiking in Sogin Colourful Sogin I waited a couple of years to write about Sogin because I realized its natural beauty is delicate and sensitiv

Helgufoss Waterfall - is it named after Helga the Daughter of Bárður Snæfellsás

On the land of Bringur in the Mosfellsdalur valley, you will find a lovely little waterfall called Helgufoss - the Waterfall of Helga, the only waterfall by this name in Iceland. We, locals, love visiting this waterfall on a sunny day, and it is heavenly to picnic in this tranquil, picturesque setting. The last time I visited Helgufoss, I noticed many people on the path and by the waterfall, so the word has spread. The paths were being fixed, and steps were being added down the hill. On wet days, the path can get quite muddy, and my husband fell flat on his face in the mud during our last v

Hiking to Drangajökull Glacier & the Sights by Snæfjallastrandarvegur 635

In this travel blog, I want to show you the sights along Snæfjallastrandarvegur, Road 635, in the Westfjords of Iceland. Here we find the only fjord in Ísafjarðardjúp within the Jökulfirðir fjords, and this detour from the main road 61 is well worth the 40 km drive to the end of the road.  I will show you the hike to Drangajökull glacier, the only glacier in the Westfjords, and visit three churches and two exhibitions on the way. Tjörneslögin Fossils, Lignite Mines & the Waterfall Skeifárfoss on the Tjörnes Peninsula

I love visiting waterfalls in Iceland, and I am especially fond of the so-called bridal veil waterfalls. I found one such waterfall hidden away up north on the Tjörnes peninsula. This beautiful coastal waterfall is called Skeifárfoss - the Waterfall in the Skeifá river. This area is also well-known for the unique Tjörneslögin sedimentary strata, and during WWI, there were two lignite mines in this area. Was the first Christian Church in Iceland built at Esjuberg in Kjalarnes?

Was the first Christian Church in Iceland built at Esjuberg in Kjalarnes?

A beautiful Celtic stone cross has been erected at the outdoor altar at Esjuberg, Kjalarnes, in southwest Iceland. Do you know why it was erected in this spot? Landnámabók, the Icelandic Book of Settlements, tells us that the Christian settler Örlygur gamli built the first Christian church in Iceland here at Esjuberg around the year 900. So the site of the Celtic cross might be the oldest church site in Iceland. And as such, it deserves a memorial. Top photo: the memorial altar and the Celtic stone cross The altar and the Celtic cross The exact location of the old church is unknown, as
