The LAVA Centre is an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition dedicated to Iceland's volcanic activity, its history, and the formation of the Icelandic landscape.

Appropriately located near several of Iceland's most famous volcanoes and geological sites, such as Eyjafjallajokull and Hekla, the LAVA Centre offers visitors a comprehensive insight into the nature of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and the tectonic movements that have shaped Iceland over millions of years. 

The LAVA Centre is found in the small town of Hvolsvollur on Iceland's South Coast. If you rent a car in Reykjavik to explore sights and attractions such as Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, you can stop by Hvolsvollur and take a fascinating 1-hour tour at the LAVA Centre to get a greater insight into Iceland's landscape.  

Things to Do at the LAVA Centre

The interactive exhibits at the LAVA Centre are designed to make complex geological concepts accessible and exciting for visitors of all ages. There is also a great restaurant on-site and a gift shop, which makes the LAVA Centre a worthwhile stop when traveling through Hvolsvollur.

The exhibits at the LAVA Centre include wall displays explaining the tectonic movements of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is actively pulling Iceland apart, as well as interactive tables that provide insights into different types of volcanoes and lava flows. Simulations allow visitors to experience the sensations of a volcanic eruption and an earthquake.

Along with the interactive exhibits, the center also has a cinema where guests can view films showcasing Iceland's volcanic history, such as the recent eruptions at Fagradalsfjall Volcano. There is also a rooftop 360° observation deck where guests can enjoy panoramic views of some of the iconic volcanoes located near the LAVA Centre.

Interesting Locations Near the LAVA Centre 

If you're staying in or stopping by Hvolsvollur and want to learn more about Icelandic history, check out the Saga Center, dedicated to one of the most famous sagas of Icelandic literature, Njals Saga. There, you can learn more about Iceland's Viking history and see interesting artistry. 

On the road close to Hvolsvollur, you will pass the beautiful waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. What makes Seljalandsfoss unique is the pathway that runs behind the cascade, allowing visitors to walk behind the falling water while the stunning beauty of Skogafoss can be viewed from both the ground level and from above.

About an hour's drive east of Hvolsvollur is the picturesque village of Vik, which is situated by the black sand beach of Reynisfjara (pictured above.)  This area is one of the most popular sites to visit in Iceland, with vast black stretches of sands and towering basalt columns.
