Located in the middle of the peninsula, both between the north and south coasts and the towns of Keflavík and Reykjavík, it sits in the shadow of the dramatic mountain Trölladyngja. It is close to two similarly picturesque lakes, Djúpavatn and Grænavatn, and not far from the largest lake in the area, Kleifarvatn.

Due to its great location, it is easy to see the other diverse sites of the Reykjanes Peninsula from Spákonuvatn. These include the geothermal area Krýsuvík, the bizarre rock pool Brímketill, and the cliffs of Krýsuvíksberg.
