Beijing in favor of Hung-chien's proposal for a tourist island
Details of the proposal to develop Hengchin as a tourist island and complement tourism efforts in neighboring Macau have been approved by China's State Council, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a notice posted on its official website on Thursday.
The notice, dated April 9, was sent to the government of Guangdong Province, a mainland Chinese province right next to Macau, and to various departments under the State Council.
National authorities are imagining Hung-chien as an international destination for leisure and tourism through non-playing tourist attractions. Some have been developed, some are under development, and some are still in the planning or fundraising stage. Hung-chien, part of mainland China's territory, sits next to Macau. There are highways and bridges that connect the island to Macau's Kotai district, the latter of which is the location for most of Macau's latest large-scale gaming resorts.
The Hung-chien proposal noted several annual milestones regarding turning the island into a tourism hub, according to a notice released by the National Development and Reform Commission. The document noted that the goal is to improve transport connectivity between Hung-chien, Macau and Hong Kong by next year, with the goal of tourism and leisure businesses becoming Hung-chien's economic prop.
However, the proposal is likely to be in 2025, before changes to improve the convenience of crossing the border between Macau and Henochin are implemented, and the island is working with Macau and Hong Kong to plan several destination package tours for travelers. The range of services available through Henchin will include meetings, incentives, meetings and exhibitions (MICE), "medical care," and cruise tourism. Tourism and leisure businesses should play a leading role in the Hungchien economy by 2035 with ecotourism offerings and more mature supportive amenities for tourism.
The series of proposals also mentioned the value of Hung-chien's goal of securing a "seamless" transportation network between Hung-chien and Macau, and of Macau tourism coaches exploring options to pick up and drop off tourists at various major attractions on the island through the Hung-chien border. The document also mentioned providing support and advice in various foreign languages to help visitors from outside the Greater China area.
Another direction for Hung-chien to seek cooperation with Macau and Hong Kong is to seek "cross-border" helicopter services, the proposal noted.
Zheng Wai Tong, deputy director of the Macau government's tourism agency, told Macau media on Thursday that he believed Heng Chin's goal to develop a tourist island could complement tourism products such as casino resorts and historical heritage in Macau.
