The Road Less Traveled
When I travel I like to find the "hidden" places. The cafés, shops and places the locals themselves frequent. I always want to feel the everyday vibe of the people in the country I'm visiting. I've never been much for organized tours or traveling in a large group with other tourists.
I love the discovery of a new place and everything it involves. Walking down a street in an unfamiliar city and observing the local people go about their day; small things like how people greet each other and interact, even if you don't understand a word of what they are saying, can tell you a lot about the general vibe and attitude of the locals.
Reykjavik is filled with all sorts of wonderful and unique gems. The music scene is extremely vibrant and local musicians can be found performing in several different venues at any given time.
The city has a great selection of second hand stores with the price range of pretty fair to insanely expensive, wonderful cafés and restaurants (same price range) and countless design boutiques, artists' workshops, antique stores, (again, same price range. It's pretty much the price range across the board here, so just apply it to everything) museums and fascinating historical places; many of which are advertised in almost every brochure on Iceland you can find. But there are still a lot of interesting and inspiring places slightly harder to find, like most good things tend to be.
In spite of being petrified of ruining all of my favorite secluded places in the city by sharing them here, I'm gonna do it anyway and be excited to discover new gems along the way.
Sharing is caring.
