Almost Golden Circle Tour

Just about two weeks ago, my father-in-law came to Iceland with a bunch of his student (He is a physics and mathematics teacher in Finland) on a study trip. Being a guide, I of course took care of arranging the various meetings they were to have but I also had the opportunity to help out planning the fun part of the trip, namely a self-drive tour to Geysir and Gullfoss. An "Almost Golden Circle tour" if you want. This was actually a rather enjoyable experience, we started at about twelve o'clock from Reykjavik and drove South-East. We passed the region of the Blue Mountains where everyt

Northern Lights in Suðurnes

I was called in at the last minute last night for, obviously, a Northern Lights tour. Always willing to spend my Saturday evening with a bunch of hopeful guests, I yessed at my boss and joined the ride. I was a bit skeptical just before departure: The past two nights had seen very low activity and I wasn't sure we would get to see anything. However, the solar activity levels got higher just before seven  o'clock and it seemed to me that this might lead to something. The weather, though, was quite unreliable and the only spot of clear skies was to be just south of Reykjavik, in the E

Northern Lights at Kalfatjörn

Hello everyone! I hope I am not boring you too death with all my Northern Lights tales because here comes another one: We were going to go out last night and the day had been beautiful in Reykjavik, Pretty clear skies, temperature just over zero degrees (Celsius that is!) and even the solar activity level looked quite promising! Then happened what always happens when you got a beautiful day in Reykjavik: you get an ugly, cloudy night. I still had to go out though, and do my best to try to find the Northern Lights otherwise my thirty-five guests would come home unsatisfied and saddened.

Crazy Crazy Northern Lights

Last night I was asked to go on a Northern Light tour. Normal right, I am a Northern Lights hunter isn't it? Well, sure, but I really wasn't feeling so good about it all. you see, there had been pretty strong Northern Lights just two days before and I know far too well that it might very well mean much weaker Northern Lights in the following days. I had checked the Solar Activity  levels and they were just averrage. I checked then the Weather and it looked quite hopeless: rather cloudy virtually everywhere with maybe a little bit less cloud on the Reykjanes Peninsula. I honestly felt like t

Cozy Cave Tour

My girlfriend lives in Norway while I moved to Iceland for work and studies. She tries to come here as often as possible and we were lucky to spend new years' eve and the beginning of January together.  Before she left, I wanted to treat her to a special experience so I got us a tour with Arctic Adventures to explore a lava cave not far from the city. We were picked up by our guide, a super-friendly guide called Sarah who incidentally happened to be from Sweden so we could chit-chat a little bit in her native language. Sarah also picked up two more guests (a very nice couple coming from th

Northern Lights Tip 7: When to Book a Tour

Hello folks, and sorry for have keeping you waiting for so long, but here I am: back and ready to spread critical Northern Lights Knowledge to you all! So, if I remember correctly, I promised to write something about how to book a tour didn’t I? Yes, of course, this is just a rhetorical question so I will cut down this lengthy introduction and present you with my few pence’ worth of opinion on the question of Northern Lights tours booking. I often get emails from prospective visitors who are planning to visit Iceland, and some of them, unsurprisingly enough ask me if they should book the

Seasons Greetings

Photo and Video Credit: Linnea Nordström   Gleðileg Jól og Gledilegt Nýtt Ár to all of you guys ! I hope you all had a good time during the holidays and that you all are ready for more intense, Old-School Northern Lights Hunting! I personally spent most of the season in Finland, cutting wood and taking a part-time job as a Julebock (Yule goat in Swedish): both were fun but I am happy to be back home in Reykjavik. I actually managed to be back on time for New Year and I was at Perlan this evening and witnessed some crazy light show. It wasn't the Northern Lights but that kicked quite

Unexpected Northern Lights

We're Sunday the Fourteenth of December. Tonight is my last tour before eloping out of Iceland with my girlfriend for Christmas. The tour we had on the previous day wad been quite a let-down. Thick clouds were covering pretty much the whole sky and even reaching the outermost reaches of the Reykjanes peninsula made no difference. We only saw two stars, for five minutes on this Night.  But Sunday was going to be different wasn't it? Weather was unexpectedly good during the day and, to everyone's´ surprise (especially mine), some Northern Lights could even be seen in late afternoo

Northern Northern Lights

To be honest, I was a bit doubtful concerning last night´s tour. The solar activity level was decent for sure, but the weather was far from that. For the past couple days, the weather forecast for Saturday Night looked great: Clear skies over most of Iceland´s inland. However, starting Friday, the forecast started looking slightly grimmer. Ultimately, on the actual day of the chase, it looked that most of Iceland would be covered in thick clouds.   Bummer, thought I. But tour they was to be in any cases. We had between 70 and 90 guests for the night and  cancellation  would  probably ha

Northern Lights on a Freezing Night

I went on tour last night, with  a buss full of hopeful guests. They were not the only one that had high hopes for the evening because according to the weather forecast and the solar activity readings it looked like this night could end up with some actual Northern Lights. Just like a couple of days ago, we meandered towards Þingvellir, mostly because the coast was to be quite cloudy this night and also because it´s not that far away from town and can thus be reached far more easily than other spots. The night was real cold. With about minus seven during the day, it really reminded me of Nor
