The lovely Stokkseyri Village in South Iceland - the Home of the Wildlife Museum, Turf Houses and Kayaking
Stokkseyri village is a lovely little village in South Iceland close to Eyrarbakki village, which I have told you about in another travel-blog. These 2 little villages are often overlooked by travellers, who don't know about their existence and stick to ring-road 1 on their travels in South Iceland. But this detour from ring-road 1 is well worth it, as, in both these villages, which are right by the sea, you will see beautiful old houses and several museums. Bjartmarssteinn Rock in the Westfjords Region of Iceland - the Market Town of the Elves
Did you know that there is a big rock in the southern part of the Westfjords region in Iceland where the elves gather together in their market town? Here the elves sell and buy and elf ships bring elf goods to Iceland. Yes, there are many strange things in my country which I regard to be totally normal, as I grew up in Iceland believing in the elves. Top photo: Bjartmarssteinn rock Bjartmarssteinn rock This rock, Bjartmarssteinn, is located east of Reykhólar, the lovely village where I stayed for 3 days and on which I have dedicated 3 travel-blogs. On the last day of my 9-day-stay in
The 2 Stone-men in the Westfjords of Iceland - Kleifabúi on Kleifaheiði and the Stone-man by Penna
I have shown you the wonderful Westfjords of Iceland in many of my travel-blogs, as I believe that the Westfjords will be a top destination in Iceland soon. And it seems that Lonely Planet shares my opinion as they chose the Westfjords as the top destination of 2022. Now I want to show you the two stone men, who don't go unnoticed on Kleifaheiði heath and by Penna river on the south side of the Westfjords region. We can say that they act as the guardians of the roads and bridges, although they were not erected for that purpose. Top photo: The head of Kleifabúi The Stoneman Kleifabúi on K
Berserkjagata on Snæfellsnes Peninsula - is this the Oldest Man-made Road Construction in Iceland?
In this travel-blog I am going to show you the oldest man-made road construction in Iceland of which the builders are known. The account is to be found in the old Icelandic Sagas. This old trail is called the Berserkjagata trail and leads through the Berserkjahraun lava field on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West-Iceland. Top photo: Berserkjahraun lava field Berserkjahraun lava field This travel-blog is a side blog of The Magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West-Iceland - Part IV- Mt. Gluggafoss Waterfall in South-Iceland - the One with the Windows
Gluggafoss waterfall - the Window Falls is a beautiful approximately 44-meters tall waterfall in Fljótshlíð in South-Iceland, often overlooked by travellers. It is actually a series of waterfalls running in the small river Merkjá and together these waterfalls are called Merkjárfoss Falls. Windows in Gluggafoss waterfall What makes Gluggafoss unique is its geology - the river has created several holes and tunnels in the soft palagonite bedrock, through which the water finds its way - we call them "gluggar" or windows. Gluggafoss is well worth visiting for this unique geology alone, but i
A Helicopter Ride to the Volcanic Eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall in SW-Iceland
Finally, I was able to see the volcanic eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula with my own eyes. We had booked a helicopter flight at the start of the eruption, but it wasn't until 7 weeks later that it was our turn, as the demand for a helicopter flight to the volcano was so great. The people on the long waiting list were mostly Icelanders as no tourists were coming over to Iceland due to the Covid restrictions. We all wanted to see the volcanic eruptions and hikers were flocking to the volcano. With my mother-in-law in the helicopter In my last travel blog, I t
The Volcanic Eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall and Geldingadalir in SW-Iceland
After 3 weeks of almost constant earthquakes, approximately 40,000 of them to be exact, which were driving us crazy here on the south-west corner of Iceland, we finally got a volcanic eruption at Geldingadalir by Mt. Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula. A crater opened in Geldingadalir which spew out primitive molten lava 17 km from the Earth's mantle, something that is quite out of the ordinary - but then this volcanic eruption is out of the ordinary as there has not been a volcanic eruption in this location for some 6,000 years! The volcanic eruption When I say that we fin
A Visit to Kollsvík Cove in the Westfjords - the smallest Settlement in Iceland
Látravík and Breiðavík are well-known coves in the Westfjords of Iceland, but both of them belong to the Útvikur coves. Many people will for sure have heard about Látrabjarg, the largest seabird cliff in my country in the vicinity, which is the best place to photograph a puffin in Iceland. I have shown you both Látrabjarg, Látravík, and Breiðavík in my travel-blogs, but there is yet another cove that belongs to the Útvíkur coves, the remote and beautiful Kollsvík cove. Ancient Archaeological Viking Ruins I have visited on my Travels in Iceland
In this travel-blog, I want to show you the Viking ruins - the archaeological sites where settlement-age farms have been discovered in Iceland. I have visited several such archaeological sites during my many years of travels in my country. I am very often asked about Viking ruins and have written this travel-blog as a reference to show to people, who are interested in the Vikings and Viking ruins. Most of our Viking stuff is still hidden in the ground, but we have discovered many ruins and pagan graves around Iceland. I must reiterate though that this is a travel-blog and by no means a pro
The amazing Lambafellsklofi Rift on the Reykjanesskagi Peninsula in South-West Iceland
One of the many spectacular sights on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland is the amazing Lambafellsklofi rift in Mt. Lambafell, which most likely dates back to the second last glacial period. It is a sight worth seeing, as here Mt. Lambafell almost got ripped in two due to dislocation or tension fractures. And it is possible to hike inside the narrow rift. Top photo: Hiking inside Lambafellsklofi rift A huge lava rock in the vast lava field This whole area is a volcanic area, and you will see volcanoes and lava fields left and right.
