Eyjafjallajökull Volcano and Þórsmörk in a Super Jeep - an Adventure in Iceland
I joined an awesome tour to Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Þórsmörk and got to ride in a super jeep for the first time in my life. This was the first guided tour I joined when I was starting to write for Guide to Iceland back in 2013. What had attracted me to writing for Guide to Iceland was that I could join guided tours in Iceland and write a travel-blog about my experience. Since then I have written 280 travel-blogs about Iceland :) We started early in the morning and our first stop was at the beautiful waterfall Seljalandsfoss. Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and Iceland's sparkling Ice Diamond Beach at Breiðamerkursandur
Jökulsárlón is a magnificent glacial lagoon in South-Iceland right by ring-road 1. The glacial lagoon is one of Iceland's greatest wonders of nature; the Crown Jewel of Iceland. Visiting the lagoon is like entering a magical world, and I say "wow" every time I see the glacial lagoon, no matter how often I visit. Top photo: a boat tour on Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón belongs to the Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður - the Vatnajökull national park. The glacier's name is Breiðamerkurjökull, a glacier tongue from Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap by volume.
Svartifoss & other beautiful Attractions in Skaftafell in South-Iceland
Svartifoss waterfall is one of the unique waterfalls in SE-Iceland. It is situated in Skaftafell nature reserve, which has since 2008 belonged to Vatnajökull National park. Skaftafell is a true oasis after driving through the vast black lava sand plains of Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash. On this drive, you will see glacier tongues in abundance, as here we are in the Vatnajökull glacier region, which is the largest of Iceland's glaciers. The beautiful Waterfalls of South-Iceland; Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss & Gljúfrabúi
I love the mesmerizing feeling of sitting by a waterfall and have to tear myself away from them. I am in luck as Iceland has got so many beautiful waterfalls, which I visit often. One of my favourite trips in my country is visiting the waterfalls in the south; the best known are Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skógafoss waterfall. The Icelandic term for a waterfall is "foss". Landmannalaugar the Pearl of the Central Highland of Iceland
I visited Landmannalaugar last summer when I joined a bus tour to this amazing location in the central Highland of Iceland. The tour is no longer available, but a similar tour; the Landmannalaugar Day Tour - the Pearl of the Highland is similar, even longer though as it lasts for 15 hours, 6 of which are free time in Landmannalaugar. Landmannalaugar is one of the hidden pearls of Iceland, a truly magical place; with rhyolite mountains, glistening lava fields, and hot springs. Celebrating New Year's Eve in Reykjavík, the Capital City of Iceland
The whole Icelandic nation goes wild on New Year's Eve in Iceland. We love shooting fireworks and you will notice that from around 8 pm, we start slowly shooting some fireworks - then everything will be dead calm from 10:30 - 11:30 pm as the whole nation watches an Icelandic TV comic show Áramótaskaupið - "Skaupið" for short, which is an Icelandic satire on the events of the year. The view of Reykjavík from the top of my mother-in-law's block of flats I have been getting a lot of questions from visitors about where they can watch this show. It is in Icelandic, but if you want to join us
The Jewels of the North - the Extraordinary Diamond Circle in North-Iceland
In North-Iceland you will find many of the jewels in Iceland's nature. And you can join one of the jewel tours of Iceland - the Diamond Circle tour. In South-Iceland we have the Ice Diamond Beach, but on the Diamond Circle tour you will visit the following spectacular sights: Goðafoss Mývatn Námafjall geothermal area Dettifoss the most powerful waterfall in Iceland Hljóðaklettar Echo Rocks Ásbyrgi, my favourite place in Iceland Tjörnes Húsavík the whale watching capital of North-Iceland Top photo: Dettifoss waterfall Goðafoss waterfall Goðafoss waterfall Our first stop was at t
A Local's Experience of the Golden Circle Tour in Iceland
The first tour I joined when I started writing travel-blogs here on Guide to Iceland, was the most popular tour in Iceland: the Golden Circle tour. There are many variations of the Golden Circle tour available, but the tour I joined is a 9-hour long guided day trip from Reykjavík where one gets to see some phenomenal places here in Iceland. There are so many beautiful places in Iceland and interesting things to do, but the Golden Circle is where I take all my foreign friends which I show around my country. Since I first wrote this travel-blog I have added more recent photos from many visit
The lovely Húsavík - the Whale Watching Capital of Iceland
When travelling in North Iceland, I would recommend visiting the lovely town of Húsavík on the Tjörnes peninsula, and maybe joining a whale-watching tour as Húsavík has been nicknamed the Whale watching capital of Iceland. And now Húsavík has become famous for the film The Eurovision Song Contest: the Story of the Fire Saga. Húsavík is also the town where my grandmother was born, so it is very dear to me. Top photo: Húsavíkurkirkja church and whale Whale Watching from Húsavík My grandmother and her 14 siblings were born in the grey house with the green roof :) Whale-watching tours are
Tungustapi in Sælingsdalur - the Church of the Elves in West-Iceland - Icelandic Folklore
While travelling in Sælingsdalur Valley in West Iceland you will notice a hill called Tungustapi. This hill is also called Álfakirkjan or the Church of the Elves, and some believe it to be the Cathedral of the Elves! Álfar is the Icelandic term for elves. There are many places here in Iceland named after the elves and the hidden people of Iceland, and there is still some belief amongst Icelanders that we share Iceland with these hidden people. Top photo: Tungustapi Tungustapi as seen from Guðrúnarlaug Many psychics have seen these hidden people of Iceland and there are many tales avail
