My name is Sigrun Guttormsdóttir Þormar. I live inBorgarfjord west Iceland, where I work as a project leader at the cultural medieval center Snorrastofa in Reykholt. For those that don't know, Reykholt was the home of Snorri Sturluson, medieval writer and poet whom lived in Reykholt from 1206 to 1241. He was the author of the Edda, Heimskringla (History of the kings of Norway) and Egils Saga Skallagrimsson. For me Snorri is the most amazing employer whom I proudly serve and constantly present in my every day life! He is absolutely still going strong at 835 years of age. Please come and visit us at www.snorrastofa.is. We are open all weekdays during the winter and all days during summer. We have an exhibition about Snorri Sturluson and offer lectures for groups. Hope to see you soon :)

Newborn foal and "Settlement Chicken"

Wanted to share this with you :) My college in Snorrastofa and training partner (we actually have a very fine local fitness center called "Heilsuhof" at the small village in Kleppjárnsreykir) lives on a small farm in the Valley of Reykholt.   Not only is she our librarian in Snorrastofa, but she also breeds horses + has around 50 ewes and last but not least some very fine icelandic chickens. In Iceland we call them "Settlement Chickens" because these  are the same chickens as the settlers took with them 1.100 years ago from Norway.  I think that´s great, because I have an "egg subscription

17th of May -Norway's Constitution Day

Congratulation Norway with your 200 years anniversary!   The constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 th in the year 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom in an attempt to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark-Norway's devastating defeat in the Napoleonic wars. The celebration of this day began spontaneously among students and others from early on. However, Norway was at that time in a union with Sweden (following the Convention of Moss in August 1814) and for some years the King of Sweden and Norway was reluctant to allow the celebrations.

First Day of Summer

The First Day of Summer all museums and exhibitons in West Iceland will be open and no entrance fee charged!  Welcome to Snorrastofa on this very special day :) The First Day of Summer my be counted the beginning of the year according to old Icelandic tradition. Falling on a Thursday between April 19 and 25, this day is known from the earliest Icelandic records.  The year was divided into summer and winter, and people counted their ages not in years but in winters! Not until late 18th century did Roman twelve month calendar acquire currency in Iceland among the laity. The First Day of Summ

Magical Carvings

The magical carvings seen here on the doorways of the exhibition were made in accordance with traditonal motifs found in medieval art. The classic image of Sigurdur killing Fafnir is on the left hand side, but on the right side, well known manuscript illuminations have been used as a model. The doorframes were highly prized in large farms and churches and, as proof of that, over a hundred frames from stave churches have been preserved in Norway alone and they are also preserved in museums and those stave churches which still exist today.  Animal and plant ornamentation is prominent in this a

Experience the Icelandic Sagas

The  Saga Museum has moved its location to a beautiful historical house at the old harbor in the center of Reykjavik.  The  museum is larger, there is a beautiful café and a light inviting  souvenir shop.  We from Snorrastofa and The Saga trail organization were all invited to the grand opening at 4pm 04.04.2014 !   This will surely be a lucky number for the Saga Museum, and I will encourage every visitor in Reykjavik to visit them.   I had a very merry time at the opening with friends and colleagues, in the picture myself from Reykholt the west, and my good friend Ásborg from Reykholt the

Snorri Groupie's

Two very enthusiastic young girls from USA came to Snorrastofa this morning!  I asked them if they knew anything about Snorri and his work?  Oh yes, they answered; We are Snorri Groupies :) " .  They had read Nancy Marie Browns book ;  " Song of the Vikings"  and this had raised their interest in Iceland and to travel all the way to Reykholt 120 km from Reykjavík,  the home of the poet/writer himself Snorri Sturluson!   They had read The Edda, Egils Saga, Njals Saga, Gisla Sonar Súrsonar Saga and Laxdæla Saga.  Next on the reading list was Snorris Heimskringla / Stories of the Norwegian kin
