Was the first Christian Church in Iceland built at Esjuberg in Kjalarnes?

A beautiful Celtic stone cross has been erected at the outdoor altar at Esjuberg at Kjalarnes in southwest Iceland. Do you know why it was erected in this spot? Landnáma - the Icelandic Book of Settlements, tells us that the Christian settler Örlygur gamli built the first Christian church in Iceland around the year 900 here at Esjuberg. So the site of the Celtic cross might be the oldest church site in Iceland. And as such it deserves a memorial. Sænautasel Turf House in the Highland of Iceland

In my search for turf houses around Iceland, I visited the lovely little turf house Sænautasel, which is a rebuilt turf house on Jökuldalsheiði heath in the highland of Iceland. It is, in my opinion, an extremely cute turf house, built from scratch from the remains of an earlier turf house. Sænautasel turf house Sænautasel dates back to 1843 and for 95-100 years people lived in this beautiful turf house - until 1943 when the last people moved out.  From 1841 until 1862 sixteen turf houses were built on the heath and at some point, 120 people lived in this area, which is approximately 500

The mystical Caves of Hella - are they the Oldest Man-made Structure in Iceland

In the southern part of Iceland, from Ölfus to Vík, you will find ancient caves that are very easily accessible. In this area, more than a hundred man-made caves have been discovered. The best-known of these caves are the mystical Ægissíðuhellar - Hellarnir á Hellu - the Caves of Hella. They are amongst the largest man-made caves in Iceland. I Joined 2 guided tours of the caves to be able to find out as much as possible about the origin of the caves, which is still a mystery to us. The Saga Locations of Gísli the Outlaw Súrsson in the Westfjords of Iceland

In this travel-blog I want to tell you about the Saga protagonist Gísli Súrsson, who was one of Iceland's best-known outlaws. Gísli's saga is told in Gísla saga Súrssonar - the Saga of Gísli the Outlaw. We Icelanders know this story well as we have to read it in school when we are teenagers. Gísli was on the run for 13 years in the Westfjords of Iceland, after having killed his brother-in-law in his bed-closet while his pregnant sister was lying next to her husband! Now, what possessed him to do such a terrible thing? Top photo: Elfar Logi Haukadalsgoði on a guided Saga tour of Haukadalur

The lovely little Village Þingeyri in the Westfjords of Iceland

In the beautiful Westfjords of Iceland, you will find many of Iceland's pearls of nature, some of which I have shown you in other travel-blogs. And in the many fjords in the Westfjords, small hamlets are dotted along the coastline. In this travel-blog I am going to show you what I found of interest in the lovely hamlet Þingeyri in Dýrafjörður fjord. Top photo: The view of Þingeyri and Gemlufallsheiði heath from the top of Mt. Sandafell Dýrafjarðargöng tunnel Access to Þingeyri is much easier now after a new tunnel was opened in 2020 connecting Arnarfjörður and Dýrafjörður fjords. So now

A very Scenic Drive across Jökulháls Mountain Pass on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

In this travel-blog I want to show you the very scenic drive across Jökulháls mountain pass on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This road, F-570, is only open for a couple of months in the summertime. The Jökulháls mountain pass will take you from Útnesvegur road no 574 from Arnarstapi in the south to Ólafsvík village on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Jökulháls means the Mountain Pass by the Glacier, and here we will be driving by the roots of the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier. Settlement - an Excellent Photography Exhibition by Pétur Thomsen Photographer

In this travel-blog I want to show you a photography exhibition by a brilliant photographic artist Pétur Thomsen. Pétur has held numerous photographic exhibitions in Iceland, and he mainly focuses on the disruption of the landscape of Iceland. In the ongoing series Settlement (landnám) Pétur investigates how we humans utilize nature and the effects this utilization has on our delicate nature. In this travel-blog I want to tell you about a multi-talented artist who lives in the Westfjords of Iceland, Marsibil Guðbjörg Kristjánsdóttir, nicknamed Billa. I got to know Marsibil in the summer of 2024, when I visited Þingeyri village in Dýrafjörður fjord twice in the fall and fell in love with her work, the beautiful Skeljaverur dolls. Top photo: With Marsibil at her atelier One of Marsibil's many Skeljaverur artwork My husband, who is a comedy magician, was booked for the annual Act Alone festival at Suðureyri in the Westfjords, and again at the Kómedíuleikhúsið - the Comedy theatre

The 20th Anniversary of the Act Alone Festival in Suðureyri in the Westfjords

Every town and village in Iceland celebrates its local festival, and in the remote Suðureyri village in the Westfjords of Iceland, a popular annual festival is held. The festival in Suðureyri is called Act Alone and is a Solo Performance festival, dedicated to the art of acting alone. Act Alone is the oldest theatre festival in Iceland and the only theatre festival that is held annually. I was invited to attend the 20th Anniversary of Act Alone, and had a great time. Don't miss this festival if you are visiting the Westfjords of Iceland on the second weekend of August. Top photo: with the
