The Ghost Skeljungur and Bóla in Bólugil - Folklore from North Iceland
In this travel-blog I want to tell you why a gorge with a row of beautiful cascades in Skagafjörður in North Iceland is called Bólugil ravine. And also why a peculiar rock close by is called Skeljungssteinn rock. These stories, which are supposed to have taken place around the settlement of Iceland, are told in Icelandic folklore. The stories are brutal and I never pass this area without thinking about the terrible fate of Bóla and Skeljungur. Opening photo: Bólugil gorge By Bólugil gorge Let's start by hearing the story of Bóla from Silfrastaðir farm, and her fight with the violent Sk
Galtastaðir-fram and other traditional Turfhouses in East Iceland
On my travels around Iceland through the years I have visited all the remaining turf houses in my country, but these few remaining turf houses are Iceland's architectural heritage. In many of my travel-blogs I have shown you what the turf houses in Iceland look like, and in this travel-blog I want to show you what the turf houses in East Iceland look like. There are a couple of turf houses and outhouses left in East Iceland that give us an idea of what turf houses in this part of Iceland were like in the olden days. A Wonderful Stay at Fossatún amongst the Trolls of West Iceland
In this travel-blog I am going to show you the fairy-tale world of trolls at Fossatún in West Iceland. It is such a fun place to visit and I always stop by it when travelling on the Silver Circle of Iceland. Here you can find Tröllagarðurinn or the Trolls' Park which was created by the owners as a recreation for the guests at Fossatún. Top photo: In Grýla's cauldron with my husband and his niece Grýla - the mother of the Icelandic jólasveinar - the Yule Lads The owners and farm stay operators of Fossatún, Steinar Berg, and Ingibjörg Pálsdóttir, bought the land at Fossatún back in 2001, an
Biskupsbrekka - the Bishop's Hill and the Memorial Crosses for Bishop Jón Vídalín
In my last travel-blog I showed you a hike on Mt. Meyjarsæti and told you about the road leading from Þingvellir to West Iceland. Now I want to show you one stop on the way, Biskupsbrekka - Bishop's Hill. Just before you reach the junction at Uxahryggir and Kaldidalur valley highland trail, you might, or might not, notice a couple of crosses by Biskupsbrekka hill on the Uxahryggjaleið route. Top photo: the memorial crosses by Biskupsbrekka One of the memorial crosses at Biskupsbrekka hill Most travellers will not notice these crosses as they blend into the landscape if you don't know th
An easy Hike on Mt. Meyjarsæti and Lake Sandkluftavatn in South Iceland
In this travel-blog I am going to tell you about an easy hike on Mt. Meyjarsæti by Hofmannaflöt plains in South Iceland next to Þingvellir national park. Mt. Meyjarsæti is not a tall nor big mountain, only 237 meters, and Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland refers to Meyjarsæti as a hill, but I'd like to think that I was hiking on a small mountain :) Top photo: Mt. Meyjarsæti Mt. Meyjarsæti and Hofmannaflöt plains This small mountain is an old beautifully shaped volcanic neck that is often overlooked by visitors. That is why I want to tell you about this area, as
Ármann in Mt. Ármannsfell and the Troll Games on Hofmannaflöt Plains in South Iceland
In this travel-blog I want to introduce you to the half-troll Ármann in Mt. Ármannsfell in South Iceland. Ármann was related to Bárður Snæfellsás, the protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, about whom I have written a special travel-blog. Ármann is much lesser known than Bárður Snæfellsás though, and that is why I want to tell you a little about him and the games on Hofmannaflöt plains by Þingvellir national park. Ármann is said to have been the protector of Alþingi, which was established in 930 at Þingvellir. Top photo: Hofmannaflöt plains and Mt. Meyjarsæti Bárður Snæfellsás Ármann'
Kerið crater and Nykurinn - the Water-kelpie in South Iceland
Kerið in Grímsnes is quite an impressive lake-filled oval-shaped volcanic crater, formed in a volcanic eruption some 6,500 years ago. Folklore is connected to the lake in the crater which tells us about a water kelpie living in the lake. In this travel-blog I am going to tell you a little bit about the craters, the water kelpie, and the settlers of this area in South Iceland. Kerið crater Kerið crater is the northern end of a row of craters, called the Tjarnarhólar craters, but they are russet to bright red in colour. The beautiful russet-coloured Kerið crater is approximately 170 meters
The Golden Circle in Iceland looks quite magical in the Wintertime
I have written many a travel-blog about the Golden Circle, which is the most popular day tour in Iceland, visited by the majority of our foreign guests. I visited the Golden Circle again on a very cold winter day when the days are very short and the temperatures are very low. On this particular day, the temperatures dropped down to -18 degrees C. Top photo: Strokkur spouting The massive Gullfoss waterfall was almost frozen solid Fortunately, the weather was still and sunny for the major part of the day, as I showed you in my last travel-blog about the second stop on our visit, the Secret
A magical Winter Visit to the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir in South Iceland
Iceland can be magical in the wintertime when the low angle of the winter sun lights up the surroundings. On a very cold winter day in the darkest month of the year, I visited Gamla laugin - the Secret Lagoon in South Iceland. The temperatures were low -14 degrees C and it became even colder later in the day at -18 degrees C, but it was still, clear skies and beautiful white snow covered the whole of Iceland. Top photo: at the Secret lagoon People soaking in the Secret Lagoon on the shortest and coldest days of the winter This lovely pool is upcountry in South Iceland, close to Flúðir vi
Grettir the Strong and Grettisbæli Lair in Hítardalur Valley in West Iceland
In my last travel-blog I told you about Hítardalur valley in West Iceland and the giantess Hít who invited the trolls of Iceland to an eventful Christmas party. In this travel-blog I want to tell you about Grettir the Strong Ásmundarson, whom we read about in the Saga of Grettir and his 3-year stay in the triangular-shaped Grettisbæli in Mt. Fagraskógarfjall in Hítardalur valley. Top photo: Mt. Fagraskógarfjall and Grettisbæli Mt.
