Torfajökull is the name of both a stratovolcano and a complex of subglacial volcanoes, north of Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland. The volcano's last documented erupted occurred in 1477.

Explore this area on a self drive tour in Iceland.

Torfajökull's most significant known eruption occurred around the year 870. This eruption enveloped the entire island in a layer of ash, making it possible to determine the dates of many archaeological finds from Iceland's settlement era.

Torfajökull is named after Torfi Jónsson who fled into the highlands and settled by the volcano when a plague struck the country in 1493.
