Inside the Volcano - An Unforgettable Icelandic Adventure!
If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind experience in Iceland, Inside the Volcano is it. We took on the journey to the Thrihnukagigur volcano, and it was worth every step. The hike itself is a bit of a mission, so you'll need to be reasonably fit to tackle it. The terrain is mostly flat, but Iceland’s wild weather doesn’t hold back. In just 15 minutes, we went through every season imaginable: overcast, rain, wind, sleet, hail, snow, and then sunshine. Nature couldn’t make up its mind!
Huge shoutout to our guide, Freja, who was just brilliant. We weren’t the fastest in the group, but she stuck with us, keeping the mood light and sharing loads of fascinating facts along the way. She made sure we felt looked after and kept us entertained during the trek.
Once we reached basecamp, it was pure comfort. Warm, welcoming, and stocked with make-your-own tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. After the volcano adventure, we even got treated to some amazing Icelandic lamb soup (and yes, they let you go back for seconds!).
Now, the descent into the volcano itself... wow! You’re harnessed up, so safety is top-notch. Stepping onto the gantry and into the open elevator felt surreal, but it’s sturdy and you feel secure the whole way down. Pro tip: keep your head inside! As we descended into the dark, it was just mind-blowing. Once you’re down there, the place lights up with vibrant colors from all the minerals and rock formations. It’s stunning.

This is genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There’s no other place in the world where you can do something like this. Make sure you wear proper hiking boots and bring layers of rainproof gear. They do have raincoats to borrow, but you’ll enjoy it way more if you’re already geared up.
It’s beautiful, a bit surreal, and completely awe-inspiring. The friendly and knowledgeable team really makes it special. If you’re in Iceland, don’t miss it!
