The Gerpir mountain peak one of the oldest in Iceland.

Gerpir is the easternmost mountain peak in Iceland and has some of the oldest rock formations in the country, dating back 12 million years. The Gerpir mountain is an excellent hiking area where travelers can appreciate Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Gerpir mountain is found in East Iceland and is the country's easternmost point. When visiting the Gerpir area, you'll notice that the surrounding area is uninhabited, but it used to be home to many traditional turf farms. There is a hiking lodge in the vicinity known as Karlsstadir, which belongs to a local travel club.

How to Get to Gerpir Mountain Peak

You cannot drive to the Gerpir mountain peak. However, you can proceed to key areas around the mountain where you can hike. Vodlavik, a sandy bay with black sand in East Iceland, is an excellent place to go hiking in the Gerpir area.

From the Ring Road, follow Road 92/Nordfjardarvegur until you turn right on Road 950/Eskifjardarvegur. Follow that road. You'll then follow Road 954/Helgustadavegur for about 16 miles (26 kilometers), and then turn right and stay right until you reach Vodlavik.

About 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Gerpir mountain is Stodvarfjordur, a fjord known for its picturesque setting and tranquil atmosphere. You can enjoy scenic drives along the fjord's coastline, with hiking, birdwatching, and photography opportunities.
