The Westman Islands - the Settler, the Stave Church, and more interesting Things to see
In this travel-blog I want to tell you about a really interesting place to visit - Vestmannaeyjar - the volcanic Westman Islands in South Iceland. In a previous travel-blog, I told you about Kötlutangi pit, the southernmost point of the mainland of Iceland. The Westman Islands are even more south than Kötlutangi; the volcanic island is the southernmost point of Iceland. Top photo: Heimaklettur and the Westman Islands harbour The electric ferry Herjólfur sails to the Westman Islands Remember why these islands got the name Vestmannaeyjar - the Westman Islands? I told you that story in my
The beautiful Brúarfoss Waterfall - is this the bluest River in Iceland
In my last travel blog I showed you the massive waterfalls in the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. In this travel blog, I want to show you one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, the powdery blue Brúarfoss waterfall which runs in the spring-fed river Brúará, which I like to call the bluest river in Iceland. Top photo: Brúarfoss waterfall Hlauptungufoss waterfall Hlauptungufoss waterfall Now, let's start the hike to the waterfall and hike for a while in Iceland's pristine nature on the east side of Brúará river. Along the way, you will see a couple of smaller waterfalls. The hik
Jökulsá á Fjöllum Glacial River and the magnificent Waterfalls in Jökulsárgljúfur Canyon
In this travel-blog I want to show you the massive glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum - the Glacial River in the Mountains, which is the second longest river in Iceland (206 km). Jökulsá á Fjöllum is a roaring, turbulent milky white/greyish glacial river coming straight from Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier, or its glacier tongue Dyngjujökull to be exact. Opening photo: Jökulsá á Fjöllum and Dettifoss Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river in the highland and Gljúfrasmiður waterfall I am going to show you what the glacial river looks like in the highland and all the way down to its estuary i
Summer Solstice and Midsummer Eve in Reykjavík
Summer solstice and Midsummer Eve are quite magical here in Iceland when the midnight sun barely sets and then rises again. In June this far up north the summer nights are bright and the day is endless. And on the longest day of the year, the 21st of June, the sun sets at midnight and then almost immediately rises again. Top photo: Summer Solstice at Viðey island Photographing the sunset from Laugarnestangi at 23:54 We Icelanders stay up late on this day and try to watch the midnight sunset. In 2023 we who live in Reykjavík were in luck as after a very long period of rain and gloomy weath
The warm Footbath of the Bakkabræður brothers in Svarfaðardalur Valley
High up on a hill in Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland a warm footbath is hidden away. It is the footbath of Bakkabræður, who were not-so-intelligent brothers who lived at Bakki in Svarfaðardalur. While staying in the beautiful Svarfaðardalur valley I hiked up to Fótlaug Bakkabræðra - the footbath of Bakkabræður, which is difficult to spot from the road if you don't know where to look for it. It was only on my second hike that I found the warm pool. Top photo: Footbathing in the footbath of Bakkabræður The large rock by the footbath and the last part of the path leading to the footbath
The beautiful Churches in Svarfaðardalur Valley in North Iceland
In the historical Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland, you will find 3 small and beautiful churches. And a narthex of an old church, which now serves as a chapel. In this travel-blog I am going to tell you a little about these churches. There is something so special about these churches in Svarfaðardalur valley, they are small timber churches built in the Svarfdælska structural type, which you cannot find anywhere else in Iceland. Top photo: Tjarnarkirkja church Vallakirkja church You can see a similar church in Öxnadalur valley (Bakkakirkja, which I also visited), Glæsibæjarkirkja c
The beautiful Svarfaðardalur Nature Reserve and Húsabakki in North Iceland
In several of my travel-blogs through the years I have shown you the valleys of Iceland, told you about historic sites that are often overlooked by visitors, and shown you what treasures these valleys keep. Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland is one such valley, which is well worth a visit, as here you will find beautiful little churches, one of the turf houses left in Iceland, Laug Bakkabræðra - the Pool of the Brothers at Bakki, the Svarfaðardalur Nature Reserve and much more. Skútafoss - the Hidden Waterfall of the Cave in East Iceland
In my last travel-blog I showed you the magnificent waterfalls in the powerful glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, but smaller freshwater rivers can also create beautiful waterfalls. One such waterfall is hidden away in East Iceland. It is called Skútafoss - the Small cave falls and it is often referred to as the Hidden waterfall. Top photo: Skútafoss waterfall Photo taken inside the cave at Skútafoss waterfall One summer my father-in-law and I drove the ring road clockwise for 10 days just the two of us and by the end of our trip, we stayed by Mt. Vestrahorn. We asked the proprietors at th
The amazing turquoise Blábjörg Cliffs in Berufjörður in East Iceland
Hidden away from the road in the beautiful Berufjörður in East Iceland is a turquoise rock called Blábjörg or Blue Cliffs. Blábjörg cliffs are by the sea by ring-road 1, but most people are unaware of this cliff and pass it. In my opinion, it is well worth it to stop and have a closer look at it, especially on a sunny day, when the colours of the cliff are vivid. Top photo: Blábjörg cliffs and Mt. Búlandstindur Blábjörg cliffs Blábjörg is a part of the Berufjarðar tuff and formed in a pyroclastic flow in a huge phreatic eruption that took place here some 9-10 million years ago. There is v
The Ghost Skeljungur and Bóla in Bólugil - Folklore from North Iceland
In this travel-blog I want to tell you why a gorge with a row of beautiful cascades in Skagafjörður in North Iceland is called Bólugil ravine. And also why a peculiar rock close by is called Skeljungssteinn rock. These stories, which are supposed to have taken place around the settlement of Iceland, are told in Icelandic folklore. The stories are brutal and I never pass this area without thinking about the terrible fate of Bóla and Skeljungur. Opening photo: Bólugil gorge By Bólugil gorge Let's start by hearing the story of Bóla from Silfrastaðir farm, and her fight with the violent Sk
