The river lies in Biskupstungur in Arnessysla county, around 245 km from Reykjavik and about half an hour‘s drive from the village Vik in Myrdalur. Tungufljot falls from Haukadalsheidi, where many smaller lake-fed rivers join together to form it. During winter it may acquire a white colour, owing to water from Sandvatn lake in the North Highlands, east of Lake Myvatn.
High up in the river is a beautiful waterfall, called Faxi. The fall is often missed by travellers but well worth checking out.
As well as trout, the river contains salmon. While the quantity of fish caught may not be large, the quality certainly is great, as the trouts will reach as much as 15 pounds or more.
The fishing season for Tungufljot is from April 1st to October 20th. The spring fishing is from April 1st to May 27th and on individual days from noon to noon. From May 27th to August 5th one may also apply for a weeks permit, i.e. from Friday to Friday. You may also apply for fishing two days in a row from August 6th to October 20th.
Particile, fly and worm are all allowed as bait, though only fly in the spring, whereas the fish shall be released again during this season.
As for accommodation, there are two fishing houses with electricity and gas grill. Fishermen will have to supply their own bedding/sleeping bags and toiletries.
