Miraculous Aurora!

On the 28th I had what was probably my last tour of the season. It ended up quite well as you are going to read right now!

It was just Friday night. Unexpectedly enough, my boss drafts me for a tour. Apparently, the tour of the previous night had ended up with no Lights whatsoever so a second mini-bus was called in to guide those who tried again this night. The weather did not look that good and our driver Heimir expressed some concerns we would not be able to see much. An outcome I feared greatly too.

After picking up our guests, we started driving out of the city when our boss called us: we had two extra guests and had to drive more than ten kilometers back in the city center to fetch them! We (reluctantly) did so but when arriving there, the groom at the hotel announced that finally, they changed their minds and would not come. Total bummer: we would not escape the light pollution of Reykjavik before ten o clock!

By then, it had started to be dark enough for us to actually see stars, and clouds! Indeed, while it started out quite alright, the clouds soon became way thicker and most of the sky quite simply disappeared!

We were heading towards Thingvellir finally when I went out of the bus one more time and started noticing some kind of strange light glowing behind the clouds:

The Northern Lights was starting! It wasn’t much, and most of the Aurora was covered by the clouds but it definitely was there!

After a little while though, the Aurora got real stronger and moved way over the clouds. I was certainly not expecting that it would be so strong! The remaining clouds, now way lower the horizon and quite thin, added some nice touch to the gleaming sky:

Shortly after midnight, the Lights had died out, but we were all satisfied by the incredible show we witnessed and the luck we had to be able to see the Aurora despite the apparent unfavourable conditions. Sometimes miracles happen, that’s my take for nights such as these.
