Sheer cliffs and waterfalls produce a striking landscape at the Ketubjorg CliffsThe Ketubjorg cliffs, spelled Ketubjörg in Icelandic, boast a splendid setting of cascading falls and sheer coastal cliffs on the Skagi peninsula in Northwest Iceland.

Travelers who enjoy birdwatching usually visit the Ketubjorg cliffside on self-drive tours around the northern region. Visitors may also book private tours, such as this three-day trip of North Iceland, or they may rent a car.

The Ketubjorg cliffs are about 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Saudarkrokur town on the Skagafjordur fjord. The cliffs are located on the Skagi peninsula, known for its exquisite landscapes, impressive basalt column rocks, steep sea cliffs, and exciting bird life.

About the Ketubjorg Cliffs

The coastal cliffs of Ketubjorg feature a waterfall bearing the same name. This seaside waterfall stands approximately 393.7 feet (120 meters) tall as it pours from the top of the cliffs. The water from the falls originates from a nearby river.

The Ketubjorg cliffs are remnants of a volcanic island formed by years of crashing waves. Nature's hard work paid off, as the site is now considered a hidden gem that travelers love to explore. Photographers also flock to the Ketubjorg cliffs to take photos of the magnificent landscapes and views surrounding the cliffs.

Summer makes the cliffside an appealing location for those wishing to enjoy birdwatching, but it's also beautiful during winter. This serene spot is a bit removed from other attractions but worth the detour for the array of greenery and flowers.

Safety at the Ketubjorg Cliffs

Sea cliffs are naturally dangerous for humans, and the Ketubjorg cliffs are no exception. In November 2019, there was a significant collapse on the cliffs after a portion of the outer edge tumbled into the sea below.

A few years prior, cracks in the cliffside appeared in a short period, causing locals to remove the signs that directed tourists to the perilous cliffside. Today it remains a dangerous area, so it's important to act responsibly and choose your viewing points carefully.

Visitors may need a professional guide to help them find the best trails and navigate the terrain. Remain cautious and enjoy the beauty of this off-the-beaten-track attraction from safe viewing spots.
