Iceland is the safest country in the world

According to the Global Peace Index Iceland is the safest country in the world 2025. They first started releasing the list of the most peaceful countries in 2007, when Iceland was not taken into account since some reliable data was missing, according to Wikipedia. From 2011, Iceland has been number one at the list every single year! (In 2010 it was second, 2009 it was fourth and in 2008 it was number 1). So what makes Iceland so safe?   This big country, with a small population of roughly 325 thousand people has no army, a murder rate of 0-1,5 per year, virtually no violent crimes, very sma

Secret Solstice 2015

Yesterday was the last day of Secret Solstice festival - and by far the best day! Secret Solstice 2015 was held in Laugardalur (Pool valley) in Reykjavík from 19th to 21st of June, starting at noon Friday and finishing just after midnight last night (Sunday). Friday started slowly, when I arrived at 4pm to watch Zero7 DJ set there were just a few hundred people there and the area felt a little empty. As the day went by (and people finished work, or stopped celebrating 100 years of women voting day which was on the same day), the area gradually got filled with people and by the time Gus Gu

100 years of women voting

On the 19th of June in 1915 the first Icelandic women got the right to vote. 2015 marks 100 years of women's right to vote in Iceland. To begin with, in 1915 only women aged 40 and over were allowed to vote, whereas men from the age of 25 had the right to vote. This age gap was supposed to gradually decline until it was the same as the age of men and if it that would've been the case, women would've had to wait until 1931 until they could vote at the age of 25. Instead, 5 years after the first women could vote, in 1920, the age was lowered to 25 to be equal with the men. It's interesting

Iceland's Independence Day

June 17th is the national day of Iceland, where Icelanders celebrate their independence from Denmark. The country bursts with national pride, and festivities can be found in every town throughout the country. June 17th holds a special place in the hearts of Icelanders as the day is filled with cultural festivities and national pride. Its formal name is "Thjodhatidardagurinn" in Icelandic, which translates directly to "the day of the nation's celebration," but it's most commonly referred to by the date June 17th. This is a great time for families to spend quality time together, as there are ma

Support Nepal by going whale watching!

A huge earthquake shook Nepal on the 25th of April, as the world is so painfully aware of. Thousands of people died and thousands more are injured. You can help out by going whale watching this Saturday! Icelandic charities as well as tourist agencies and individuals are doing their bit to help in the aftermath of the earthquake. This Saturday Whale Safari is organising special whale watching tours every hour from 9am until 4pm. The weather is supposed to be good so it's the perfect thing to do to show support! All of the proceedings go towards rescue and relief programs for victims of th

RuPaul's Drag Race in Reykjavík!

RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition TV series that is having a show in Iceland TONIGHT! In 2014, TV Guide Magazine ranked the series as one of its 20 best television series picks of the year. My facebook feed has pretty much been filled with information about this show, as my friends are super excited to go and witness this in Gamla Bíó at 11pm tonight. (I'm sadly in London so I'll miss out). You can still get tickets to RuPaul's Drag Race here for 6500 ISK or a VIP ticket for 8900 ISK (then you get to meet the queens before the show, show up at 9pm). Tonight's performa

Harpa: Reykjavík's Concert and Conference Hall

Have you been to Reykjavík's concert and conference hall, Harpa? Besides concerts and conferences events include gigs, theatre, stand-up comedy, musicals, art exhibitions, music festivals and the building has even been used as a screen to play the computer game Pong on it! Harpa was very controversial and its history spans decades of years. The first suggestion of building a concert hall in Iceland came in 1880 but it wasn't until more than a hundred years later, in the 1990's that things started happening.  After years of location and design suggestions (dating back to the early 90's) th
