The amazing turquoise Blábjörg Cliffs in Berufjörður in East Iceland
Hidden away from the road in the beautiful Berufjörður in East Iceland is a turquoise rock called Blábjörg or Blue Cliffs.
Blábjörg cliffs are by the sea by ring-road 1, but most people are unaware of this cliff and pass it. In my opinion, it is well worth it to stop and have a closer look at it, especially on a sunny day, when the colours of the cliff are vivid.

Blábjörg cliffs
Blábjörg is a part of the Berufjarðar tuff and formed in a pyroclastic flow in a huge phreatic eruption that took place here some 9-10 million years ago.
There is very easy access to Blábjörg, but it is not easy spotting it unless you know what you are looking for.
Blábjörg cliffs are huge
When I posted my photos of Blábjörg cliffs on Facebook people who live in East Iceland didn't know about this blue rock. I first saw it on Hit Iceland, and thus went looking for it.
When I was driving in this area I noticed a strange colour in the mountain above Blábjörg, like a blue vein. It is a massive layer of ignimbrite that leads to Blábjörg cliffs.
So if you cannot find Blábjörg look for a blue layer in the mountains.
Blábjörg cliffs - I always see a duck in this photo :)
Blábjörg cliffs were declared protected in 2012 and rightfully so as they are a natural phenomenon.
In my photos, you can see Blábjörg cliffs with the backdrop of Mt. Búlandstindur, which is a beautiful pyramid-shaped mountain, 1069 meters tall.
In my opinion, and I know that many people agree with me, Mt. Búlandstindur is amongst Iceland's most beautiful mountains, and the locals believe that it has got supernatural powers.
The Berufjarðartindar mountain peaks
There are more beautiful mountains in Berufjörður, extraordinary really, and as I love beautifully shaped mountains then Berufjörður has become one of my favourite fjords in Iceland.
I never tire of looking at these amazing mountains and pray for a clear sky during my visit to the Eastfjords.
But as luck has it then more often than not the dreadful Austfjarðaþoka - the Eastfjord fog has a tendency of creeping up on me.
This is my favourite mountain in Berufjörður
But we were very lucky in 2020 when we drove the ring road 3 times and it was warm and sunny almost the whole time. So I managed to get some beautiful photos of the Eastfjords with a clear sky.
My favourite mountain in Berufjörður is the mountain in my photo above. Its shape somehow calls to me when I drive by it and I cannot keep my eyes off it.
When you visit Berufjörður check if it calls to you as well.
By Blábjörg cliffs you will see a basalt dyke in the sea
There are so many things to see and do in this area and when a relative of mine told me that there wasn't much to see in the Eastfjords and that he mostly just drove through this area without stopping I made a list for him with all the stops that I find interesting.
As the Eastfjords are all but dull but dotted with small villages and hidden natural phenomena, one just has to know what to look for :) Here is the first part of the list which I created for him:
East Iceland is dotted with beautiful little Villages and Hidden Secrets - I will be writing about all these stops in other travel-blogs.

Have a lovely time in the beautiful Eastfjords of Iceland :)
