After our visit to Rauðinúpur cape on the northwest corner of the Melrakkaslétta plain peninsula, we continued on our journey south and visited one of only two villages on the peninsula, Kópasker village. The inhabitants of Kópasker are only approx. 121 and meat processing is the biggest industry here. On my travels on the Melrakkaslétta plain peninsula in North-East Iceland, I drove around the peninsula and visited as many of the beautiful sights there as I could. This area is very rich in birdlife and the tranquillity so far north is almost unsurpassed. I was heading for Rauðinúpur or Red Cape, which protrudes 73 meters out of the North-West end of Melrakkaslétta plain. I had already visited one of the northernmost places on the mainland of Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi on the same day and was longing for more of the same. Rauðinúpur is located at 65°28'23.29" north. On our second day on the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland, we headed for Hraunhafnartangi spit, which lies at 66° 32′ 9.6″ N, 16° 1′ 31.08″ W, making it one of the northernmost points on the mainland of Iceland, together with Rifstangi, which is also close by here on Melrakkaslétta. In July 2016 it was confirmed by Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland that Rifstangi is located 68 metres further north than Hraunhafnartangi. You will find Melrakkaslétta north of a very popular area in the North, with all the beautiful stops on the Diamond Circle. One of Iceland's treasures, Þingeyrakirkja church in North Iceland, is amongst the most noteworthy churches in Iceland. It is located at the historical Þingeyrar, the site of a Benedictine monastery from 1133 to 1551. Þingeyraklaustur monastery was the first permanent monastery in Iceland, and the longest-running monastery. Let's take a tour of this beautiful church and explore the history of Þingeyrar. As you might have noticed from my previous travel-blogs, I adore turf houses. Whenever I travel around Iceland, I seek out turf houses and turf churches; they are just so characteristic of my country. Everybody lived in a turf house in Iceland, both rich and poor, and there are still several turf houses in Iceland, most of which have been preserved. There is a lovely historical turf house in Skagafjörður in North Iceland, called Glaumbær farm, which should not be missed while travelling in this area. I went on a truly memorable trip when I sailed by boat from Drangeyjarferðir tours, and climbed up to the top of the steep Drangey Island sea cliff in Skagafjörður fjord in North Iceland. There is only one accessible path to the top of Drangey Island - on the man-made path at Uppgönguvík or the Climbing-Up-Cove. It is a steep path up to the top of the 180 m high cliff, but there are ropes and chains to make the ascent easier. And a ladder on the final climb. I recently went on a fantastic tour with my mother, where I explored a beautiful canyon in Iceland - Stakkholtsgjá canyon. We were a group of Icelandic people travelling together and were headed to Þórsmörk National Park on a day trip. One of the stops on the way was to hike into this beautiful canyon.
