The West Iceland, where Sturlungalaug hot springs is located. Sturlungalaug hot springs, Guðmundarlaug in Icelandic, is a small natural pool located on the eastern part of the Snaefellsness Peninsula. 

The hot spring is situated on an off-the-beaten path, making it perfect for self-drive tours exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The hot spring is usually not included in popular tours and is quite challenging to access. Due to this, the place is not crowded with tourists and offers serenity for those willing to find it. 

About Sturlungalaug Hot Spring

Sturlungaulag hot spring is a hidden gem in West Iceland nestled amid a massive grassy field. It consists of two side-by-side pools, where one is larger than the other. 

The journey to the hot spring can be difficult and a bit tricky. However, it will be worth it once you dip into its water and relax, surrounded by Iceland's beautiful nature. This kind of experience is what makes it unique and special. 

Visitors to this geothermal hot spring can enjoy it free any time of the day, and it can accommodate around eight to 10 people. Its temperature ranges from 35 C to 40 C. 

How to Get to Sturlungaulag Hot Spring

Sturlungaulag is not on the map, making it difficult to find. However, travelers can locate it with these coordinates 64.869597, -22.283878. 

The easiest way to get to the hot spring is by driving a car that can withstand bumpy roads. 

To go to Sturlungaulug, turn off route 54 onto route 55, connecting the north and south of the eastern side of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Traveling south to north, take a left turn on route 55. The left turn is around 1.86 miles from the start of the road ( the junction with route 54).

Then it's around 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) along a gravel road to reach the hot springs. Look for a sign that says Sydri-Raudimelur. Just beyond this, you'll turn toward the Sydri Raudamelskula crater and find your bathing spot behind the small hill southeast of the crater.

Places of Interests Near the Hot Spring

Due to its location in the Snaefellsnes peninsula, travelers visiting Sturlungaulag's geothermal hot spring won't be short of other places to visit. The Snaefellsnes peninsula is home to many famous sites in Iceland, such as the Snaefellsjokull stratovolcano, Vatnshellir lava cave, the Gatklettur natural rock arch, the Raudfeldsgja gorge, and many more. 

The hot spring is close to the Gerduberg cliffs, the Eldborg crater, and Landbrotalaug hot spring. 

The Gerduberg cliffs offer fantastic vistas with their row of cliffside hexagonal basalt columns. This attraction is only 7.7 miles (12.4 kilometers) southwest of Sturlungalaug. 

The Eldborg crater resulted from an eruption in the region around 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. The crater is located south of Sturlungalaug hot springs, only 8.4 miles (13.5 kilometers) away.

There's another hidden bathing pool near Sturlungalaug called Landbrotalaug hot spring. It's smaller than Sturlungalaug and only 6.1 miles (9.8 kilometers) south.

Accommodations are available near the geothermal hot spring, making exploration of the area easier. 

For travelers who want to stay in a town, the nearest town to the hot spring is Borgarnes, only 28.2 miles (45.4 kilometers) away. Borgarnes has hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and supermarkets. Travelers can rest and refill their supplies before exploring Snaefellsnes.
