A Local's Experience of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

The Blue Lagoon is one of the best-known and most popular places to visit in Iceland. Being an Icelander I have visited the Blue Lagoon many, many times through the years, and have always enjoyed my visit. But in the past few years, the Blue Lagoon has become so popular amongst our foreign guests that pre-booking became required. That is when I stopped visiting the Blue Lagoon. As earlier on it was a spur of the moment decision to visit the lagoon - if we had sunny weather we would consider a visit to the lagoon, but now we locals cannot do that anymore. I heard stories that it had become

Soaking in the Geosea Geothermal Sea baths in Húsavík

New geothermal sea baths, Geosea, have opened on the Húsavíkurhöfði cape in North-Iceland. I had seen some beautiful photos of the sea baths and knew that they would be a great addition to the already flourishing Whale watching capital of Iceland. I was very eager to see them so we travelled up north to try them out. I can describe my experience with one word - heavenly :) Top photo: Soaking in Geosea geothermal sea baths Geosea geothermal sea baths in Húsavík The infinity view from the new geothermal sea baths is breathtaking, and it filled me with such serenity soaking in the hot s

Arnarfjörður Fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland - the Sea Monster Fjord of Iceland!

On one of my visits to the Westfjords of Iceland, I visited Arnarfjörður, the second-longest fjord in the Westfjords. It is believed that nowhere else in Iceland have there been more sightings of sea monsters than in this beautiful fjord in Iceland's mysterious Westfjords. We Icelanders have known about the sea monsters ever since the Vikings settled Iceland around 874. Throughout the centuries there have been over 4,000 recorded sightings of sea monsters and lake monsters all around  Iceland!  Top photo: Admiring the view Dynjandi waterfall Many of the sea monsters have been seen in A

A wonderful Tour to Þórsmörk Valley in South-Iceland with Midgard Adventure

I thought it was time to have some adventure in my life, so I contacted Midgard Adventure and asked to join their Þórsmörk Valley - Super Jeep Day Tour. Some of the staff of Guide to Iceland had joined one of their Mystery Super Jeep Tour - South Coast or the Highland, and I had seen photos of the spectacular red super jeeps, so I was eager to be a part of this action. I opted for a summer tour to Þórsmörk valley - a beautiful pearl of nature in South Iceland, an oasis nestling between three glacier caps, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindafjallajökull. Eyjafjallajökull, which erup

A Local's favourite Volcanic Craters in Iceland

Iceland is a volcanic island and around the country, you will find some 130 volcanos. Most of them are inactive and you can visit the volcanic craters, some of which are lake-filled. One of them is even filled with warm whitish opaque geothermal water in which you can bathe, like Víti explosion crater in the Askja caldera in my photos above and below. In this travel-blog, I am going to show you 9 of my most favourite craters, which I have visited on my travels in Iceland. A Local's Favourite Caves in Iceland

In the past few years, I have taken up a new interest - visiting the caves of Iceland. And I have discovered the most colourful lava tubes in different parts of my country, and extraordinarily beautiful ice caves, which envelop you in all shades of blue colours. In this travel-blog, I want to show you my favourite caves, which I have visited on my travels in my country. Along with many other interesting caves in Iceland. A List of the beautiful Icelandic Turf Houses, I have visited on my Travels in Iceland

I want to show you, travellers in my country, our old architectural heritage - the turf houses of Iceland, which are a passion of mine. I am often asked where the turf houses are located, which ones are the 'original' turf houses and which ones are latter-time turf houses - and which ones are turf outhouses. In this travel-blog, I am going to show you all of the original turf houses - the turf churches, the latter-time turf houses, hypothetical turf houses, turf outhouses, turf fishermen's huts, turf sheds and more turf structures, which I have visited on my travels in my country. Have you met the angry Ghost at Gunnuhver Mud Pool in Reykjanes in SW-Iceland?

In my last travel-blog, I told you about the colourful Seltún geothermal area on the Reykjanes peninsula in SW Iceland. There is another very interesting geothermal area on this peninsula that is well worth a visit; Gunnuhver geothermal area (it's named after a ghost!) Top photo: Gunnuhver Gunnuhver and the information sign Gunnuhver is the collective name for this geothermal area, named after the angry female ghost Guðrún, or 'Gunna' for short. Here, you will find fumaroles, steam vents, and mud pools and will even risk getting lost amidst the steam. This can make visiting Gunnihver qu

Seltún - the colourful Geothermal Area at Krýsuvík on the Reykjanesskagi Peninsula in SW-Iceland

You don't have to go far from Reykjavík to see colourful geothermal areas. I have already told you about the Hengill geothermal area in a previous travel-blog,  which is only half an hour's drive from the capital city. Another colourful geothermal area is Seltún, which is located beneath Sveifluháls, on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula in SW Iceland. Seltún is located some 40 km away from Reykjavík. Top photo: boiling mud pools at Seltún geothermal area Seltún geothermal area This interesting geothermal area has got two names; it is either called Seltúnshverir (the hot springs at Seltún)

A breathtaking view from the Top of Mt. Eldfell Volcano in the Westman Islands

The maroon Eldfell volcano - the Fire Mountain - was created in the volcanic eruption of 1973, in the Westman islands. The eruption started next to Vestmannaeyjabær town, on Heimaey island, and all the inhabitants of the island had to flee to the mainland of Iceland. Top photo: on top of Eldfell volcano Mt. Eldfell Volcano in the Westman Islands The volcanic eruption started on the 23rd of January 1973 and lasted until the 3rd of July! More than 400 houses were damaged and buried beneath the cinders and pumice - some of them even got buried under 3-10 meters of cinders! Some of these
