The New Post Office is located in the center of the only town of the Westman Islands, Heimaey. This settlement has a population of 4,500 and a wealth of amenities. Grocery stores, bars, restaurants, cafes, and boutiques are all within easy walking distance, as are many of the island’s incredible attractions.

Just 383 yards (350 meters) north is the Sea Life Beluga Whale Sanctuary, a refuge of rescued belugas and puffins. The whole bay allows these once neglected and mistreated whales to thrive, and in the center, you can learn about this beautiful species and meet the birds.

The Eldheimar Museum is just over half a mile (one kilometer) away and documents the eruption of the Eldfell volcano. This event, which occurred in 1973, started in the middle of town, soon opening into a ravine that engulfed the nearby buildings and infrastructure. The rescue effort ensured all but one unfortunate local survived, and the ingenuity of the rescuers managed to divert the lava flow away from the harbor and many buildings.

Eldfell is now an attraction in its own right, located right behind the museum. You can hike the now dormant volcano to attain spectacular views of Heimaey and its surrounding islands.

If traveling to Iceland between May and September, you’ll be delighted to discover that the archipelago is the world’s largest nesting ground for puffins. You can marvel over these gorgeous birds by land from the cliffs or by boat from the local harbor. Many of these boat trips include visits to geological marvels such as the Elephant Rock and whale watching components.

If you elect to whale watch, you will likely see dolphins and porpoises and may even spot orcas and great whales.

It is possible to get to the Westman Islands by taking a domestic flight from Reykjavik or a ferry, which you can take cars onto, from Landeyarhofn. Landeyarhofn is 85 miles (137 kilometers) from the capital.
