Summary
Description
The Birkilauf Nature Lodge is a lovely escape, particularly for couples, on the banks of Lake Myvatn in North Iceland. Travelers seeking gorgeous views, luxurious rooms, and self-catering facilities should book their room while availability lasts.
Location & Nearby
Situated on the Diamond Circle sightseeing route, right beside its most famous feature, there are few choices of accommodation as conveniently placed as the Birkilauf Nature Lodge. You can easily walk to the waters of Lake Myvatn and admire its thriving birdlife, its flourishing flora, and the basalt towers that rise strikingly from the surface.
The geology of this area is fascinating and accessible. Dimmuborgir, a lava fortress steeped in folklore, is four kilometers away. Here, you can locate the secret hot spring cave of Grjotagja, which Game of Thrones will recognize from scenes north of the Wall. Six kilometers from the Birkilauf Nature Lodge is the Namaskard Pass, a geothermal mountain pass with many hissing steam vents.
Meanwhile, the pseudocraters of Skutustadir are 8.6 miles (14 kilometers) away, which you can ascend for some stunning views.
The other sites of the Diamond Circle are also within easy driving distance. The furthest away is Akureyri, the capital of north Iceland, a vibrant town with countless tour opportunities and important cultural sites. Here, you can find amenities such as grocery stores, restaurants, souvenir shops, and so on. The drive there is 53 miles (86 kilometers).
By driving 43 and 51 miles (70 and 82 kilometers), you can access the sites of Dettifoss and Asbyrgi. Dettifoss is the most powerful European waterfall, thundering into a beautiful, ancient canyon. Asbyrgi is similarly dramatic, forming an enormous canyon with abundant forests and cliffs that tower over 328 feet (100 meters).
Nearer to the guesthouse are the features of Godafoss and Husavik, which are 33 and 36 miles (53 and 58 kilometers) away. Godafoss is another waterfall with breathtaking white waters and exciting history, which you can learn from signs on site. Husavik, meanwhile, is one of Iceland’s oldest towns and a world-famous spot for its incredible whale-watching opportunities. Operators often boast 100% success rates in summer.
