The Hvammur Cottages are located right by the Sorcerer’s Cottage on the eastern side of the Westfjords. This historic turf house is part of the famous Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery and is renowned for being the home to a 17th Century Icelandic wizard. The staves he carved on the walls and furnishings can still be located by those with a keen eye, and the items on display are authentic examples of what he would have used for casting spells.

Not only is this a great place to learn about magic, but life in Iceland before industrialization. Turf houses are now rare but were once the way of life for the vast majority of the population throughout medieval and renaissance times.

Twenty minutes from the Hvammur Cottages, you’ll find the town of Holmavik, which houses the rest of the museum. This section has a wide range of bizarre and fascinating displays, with spellbooks, runes, and even a morbid example of necropants - a pair of trousers made from human skin.

In Holmavik, you’ll also find grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and tour services. The town has a beautiful position on the coast, with plenty of nature walks you can enjoy. You can also reach the village of Drangsnes in 20 minutes, which has similar amenities and coastal hot pools for bathing.

The Hvammur Cottages are a great base from which to explore the Westfjords. They are about halfway between Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, and some of the region’s most popular attractions, such as Dynjandi waterfall and the town of Isafjordur. All are around three hours away. Dynjandi waterfall is famous for its great height, magnificent formation, and beautiful surroundings. Isafjordur, meanwhile, is a fascinating settlement with plenty of tour opportunities such as whale watching.

There are five cottages at Hvammur, all with a private hot tub. Four cabins can accommodate four people, with two in a twin room and two on the sofa bed. One cottage can accommodate six, as it has an additional double bedroom. From the windows, you have stunning river and mountain views.

The kitchen is fully furnished and the dining areas comfortable, and the outdoor spaces have barbecue facilities and furniture, allowing you to self-cater. The living room, meanwhile, has a flat-screen television. The decor is clean, comfortable, and modern, and you will have access to private bathrooms in each unit.
