Description
The Stundarfridur Cottages are a set of beautiful log cabins immersed in the landscapes of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland. Couples, families, and small groups of friends will find them a fantastic getaway during their travels around this spectacular region.
Location and Nearby
The Stundarfridur Cottages are seven miles (12 kilometers) south of Stykkisholmur, the largest town on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This location places you very close to many major attractions of the region, nicknamed Iceland in Miniature due to its many various sites.
One of the most famous of these is the standalone mountain of Kirkjufell, which is 21 miles (34 kilometers) away. This feature is best known to Game of Thrones fans as ‘the Mountain Shaped Like an Arrowhead,’ but others have called it the ‘Pyramid Peak’ or ‘the Church Mountain.’
Ytri Tunga beach is another nearby site, only 29 miles (47 kilometers) to the south. A haven for seal-watchers, you can marvel over these creatures as they lay out on the rocks just offshore and splash around in the waters. This coastline is unique in Iceland due to its golden, rather than black, sands.
You can find many more sites of Snaefellsnes around the Snaefellsjokull glacier, an ice-capped volcano on the very tip of the peninsula. The area surrounding it is a breathtaking national park with lava landscapes, bird-watching cliffs, and dramatic shorelines. The fishing village of Arnarstapi, the historic shoreline of Djupalonssandur, and the basalt plug of Londrangar are just a few examples of what you can find here.
Snaefellsjokull is 52 miles (84 kilometers) east. Around it, you’ll find even more special attractions, such as Budir church and the Raudfeldsgja gorge.
Travelers embarking on a clockwise Ring Road journey will find the cottages a convenient place to stay after starting their holiday with a tour of West Iceland, as they are only 103 miles (165 kilometers) from Reykjavik. If you plan to stay at Stundarfridur on the first night of your holiday, you’ll find it 129 miles (207 kilometers) from Keflavik International Airport.
Facilities and Amenities
There are three cottages available at Stundarfridur, designed for couples and small families. Cottage One accommodates five, with a double bed and space on the sofas in the living room for three. Cottages Two and Three have a similar setup but only room for four guests, as they have smaller couches.
All cabins are 269 square feet (25 square meters) and boast kitchenettes, private bathrooms with showers and hairdryers, high-speed WiFi, DVD players, flat-screen televisions, and coffee-making facilities. Their style is rustic and ambient, but the facilities are modern.
There is a 24-hour desk at Stundarfridur Hotel, which is right by the cottages. The staff there will help you with any issues regarding your room and can help you plan your days in the surrounding area.
Breakfast at the hotel is included and parking is free.
