Hlin Guesthouse is just ten minutes south of the tiny village of Varmahlid, which sits on Route 1 (the road that encircles the country). It is thus immersed in countryside bliss, with rolling fields, Icelandic horses, and beautiful rivers all in the surrounding area; further afield, and you’ll see the dramatic mountains of Iceland’s interior.

Varmahlid has a few basic services for travelers but is more famous for being home to authentic Icelandic turf houses, which are very rare around the country. For more amenities, you can drive to the capital of North Iceland, Akureyri, which is just over an hour away.

From here, it is easy to access the most popular sites of the north; Godafoss waterfall, the Lake Myvatn area and Dettifoss waterfall are just around 30, 60, and 90 minutes drive respectively.

An advantage of staying at Hlin Guesthouse rather than one near Akureyri is the fact that it makes sites further west more accessible; the infinity pool at Hofsos takes just half-hour to reach, whereas the Hvitserkur rock monolith and its surrounding seal watching sites can be accessed in around an hour and a half.
