Description

The Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse is a cozy home-away-from-home in the rural landscapes of North Iceland, close to the ring road and Vatnsnes Peninsula. Ring road travelers and those eager to stay close to beautiful wildlife and geological marvels will find it welcoming, affordable, and perfectly placed.

Location & Nearby

Located eight miles (13 kilometers) north of the ring road, the Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse is excellent for those encircling the country, as it allows you to find respite between your exploration of the west and north. It is also just south of the Vatnsnes Peninsula, a beautiful area renowned for its geology and wildlife.

Most notable amongst its geological marvels is the Hvitserkur rock monolith, also eight miles (13 kilometers) away but in the opposite direction. This unusual structure stands offshore and resembles an elephant with its trunk in the water, though others see a dinosaur or dragon. It was said to be a troll frozen by sunlight as it tried to bombard the nearby Borgarvirki rock fortress in folklore. Historically, this natural feature was an unassailable ‘castle’ by clans of early settlers.

In terms of the local wildlife, the Vatnsnes Peninsula is one of the best locations in the world for seal watching. Many colonies can be found along the beaches, playing in the surf or hauling out on rocks and sand. You also have a great chance of spotting many species of seabirds as you drive along the shore.

You can learn about the seals at the Icelandic Seal Center, which is in Hvammstangi, 18.5 miles (30 kilometers) away. You can also find amenities such as grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations in this town.

Other settlements nearby include Blonduos, a commercial center, and Skagastrond, which overlooks a magnificent fjord. They are 30 miles (48.5 kilometers) and 49.5 miles (80 kilometers) away from Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse.

Though the northwest of Iceland is away from the major tourist trails, you can still find excursions to embark on in the local area, such as horseback riding, highland hiking, and boat tours.

Facilities & Amenities

The Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse can accommodate ten guests in twin and triple rooms with free WiFi and spectacular mountain views. The whole house can be rented for large families, groups of business travelers, and gangs of friends, or you can book room by room.

The bathroom facilities, fully furnished kitchen, and comfortable living room are shared and regularly maintained. You’ll find a television, books, and board games in the lounge, providing entertainment on rainy days.

The guesthouse is located on a farm, with few other buildings around, making it a lovely base for gentle hikes in the surrounding nature. In winter, the dark landscapes around Sydri-Thvera provide many opportunities to seek out the northern lights, while in summer, you can take strolls under the light of the midnight sun.

Why Choose Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse?

The Sydri-Thvera Guesthouse is a fantastic choice of affordable, cozy accommodation for travelers to North Iceland, whether you are traveling as a pair, trio, or larger group. Check availability by choosing a date.
