Location & Nearby
Hotel Eskifjordur is in the settlement of Eskifjordur, an old fishing village in East Iceland. Getting to Eskifjordur takes only a 15-minute detour off the Ring Road. Once you reach Eskifjordur, you'll see Hotel Eskifjordur along the main road.
Located inside a fishing village, the hotel is surrounded by rich natural beauty and areas abundant in wildlife. Just by opening your windows, you'll see the beautiful landscape and greenery around the hotel.
It's also an excellent place to stay if you wish to engage in various outdoor activities both on-site and in the surroundings.
When staying in winter, you can visit Eskifjordur's ski resort for skiing and snowboarding. You can go up one of the area's majestic mountains and ride your skis or snowboard down the slope.
If you wish to learn about Eskifjordur's history as a fishing village, stop at The East Iceland Maritime Museum, about 590 feet (180 meters) from the hotel. The building that houses the museum was built in 1816. However, it first served as a general store.
Today, the museum is home to a collection of articles about fishing and marine product processing. The exhibits are divided into two rooms. The ground floor is where you'll find items devoted to fishing and ships, while the second floor focuses on the different types of livelihood related to the sea.
Another historic site close to the hotel is Randulf's Sea House restaurant. Located around 0.62 miles (1 kilometer) from Hotel Eskifjordur, Randulf's Sea House offers some of the finest local delicacies. Their best-sellers include shark meat, reindeer, dried fish, and pickled herring.
Aside from its tasty menu, Randulf's Sea House attracts visitors through its rich cultural heritage. The building was built in 1890 by Norwegian Peter Randulff. Its initial function was to provide a place for landing and processing herrings.
The old sea house eventually closed for around 75 years until a significant development occurred in 1980. That year, the East Iceland Museum Society became part-owner of the sea house, which led to the building's restoration.
