Description

Treat yourself to an experience unlike any other with this beautiful and unique hike through the spectacular, remote nature of the east Icelandic highlands. This excursion should not be missed by any in the area who are passionate about this country’s nature or history.

The tour begins at the Wilderness Centre, a little-known retreat on the cusp of the magnificent highlands in east Iceland, not far from the region’s capital, Egilsstaðir.

Here, you will meet friendly, experienced guides, who know the area’s history, culture and folklore inside and out. While on the site, you will also have a chance to meet the resident farm animals.

From the Wilderness Centre, you will set out into the beautiful nature, best known for its canyons, geology, flora and river systems. You will be walking in the direction of a long-abandoned farm, called Kleif, and will hear a range of funny stories and rumours about the previous residents. When you get there, be provided with a rejuvenating mug of hot chocolate or coffee.

After Kleif, you will have the opportunity for some adrenaline-pumping adventure. Across the Jökulsá river canyon, there is a historical ‘cableway-cart’ that you can winch yourself across the river on. This is entirely optional, but a thrilling way to feel like an Icelander of old for those not too afraid of heights or water.

All in all, the hike will last from three to four hours, and at its conclusion, you will return to the Wilderness Centre. While here, you are welcome to check out the restaurant, which serves delicious traditional foods and visit the on-site exhibition about life in the Icelandic highlands over the past millennium.

Don’t miss this authentic look into Iceland’s nature and history, and book this amazing tour in the remotest regions of the east. Check availability by choosing a date.
