After waking up in the peace and tranquillity of the rural nature of the Golden Circle, you'll head downstairs for another fantastic breakfast away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Today you'll spend the day exploring the wondrous South Coast of Iceland known for its plethora of waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, mountains, rolling hills, and black sand beaches. Much like the previous day, you will have three options based on how you'd like to customize the tour to best suit your preferences.
Option 1 - Take a 10-hour private tour of the South Coast of Iceland, visiting both Seljalandfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Solheimajokull glacier, Reynisfjara Black sand beach, and the quaint village of Vik.
Option 2 - Take a 12-hour private tour of the South Coast of Iceland, stopping off at the best stops along the way as far as the village of Vik. You'll also get the added benefit of visiting one of Iceland's natural ice caves within the Myrdalsjokull glacier on top of the giant volcano Katla. Please note that the Katla ice cave tour is not private.
Option 3 - Take a 14-hour private tour along the South Coast of Iceland, checking out the best spots along the way, traveling as far as the crown jewel of Iceland, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This option has the added benefit of experiencing the incredible views of Vatnajokull national park, driving through the most breathtaking of lava fields, and a chance to witness the mighty floating icebergs of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.
Whichever option you select, you're in for one of the best road trips in Iceland due to the sheer number of incredible attractions and the uniqueness of each. Make sure to take advantage of asking your guide all of your questions, who will be happy to educate you on everything Icelandic.
After you've had breakfast, your driver will meet you in the hotel lobby before whisking you down route one and along the South Coast.
You'll first stop at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which you'll be able to see for miles around on your journey up from the road. Seljalandsfoss stands proudly at 197 ft (60 m), with glacial meltwaters plummeting into the pools beneath. The unique feature of this waterfall is the ability to walk behind it during the summer months, thanks to a perfectly formed cavern that you can easily stand in and gather some dramatic photos from.
A little further along the road and you'll visit the second waterfall of your tour, Skogafoss. Standing at the same height as Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss is known well for its sheer power and ability to walk right up close, if you don't mind the powerful sprays of the waters. You can also climb the adjacent steps to the top of the falls for another unique perspective. In folklore, Skogafoss is said to be the home of a mighty treasure behind the powerful thunderous waters.
Another short drive away will take you to one of the glacier outlets of the Myrdalsjokull glacier, called Soleimajokull. Known distinctly for its darkened black twinges on an otherwise blue glacier, Solheimajokull earned this look due to the fallen ash from the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano.
Next up on this fantastic tour is the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach. On this spectacular yet eerie volcanic location, you'll witness deep basalt caverns carved into the untouched mountainside as well as the famous Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks standing proudly just offshore. According to local folklore, these dramatic features are two trolls who were turned to stone by the rising sunlight, having failed to find refuge when their curiosity took them out to investigate a recent shipwreck.
Not far from here, you'll stop off at the charming village of Vik. Situated right on the coast with breathtaking views all around, this is the perfect place for you to stop off for lunch for the day. After this, those who choose option one will start to head back towards your hotel in the Golden Circle.
However, for those who choose to take option 2, you'll meet your guide to visit the marvelous Katla ice cave. Once you've been kitted out with thermals and crampons and received your safety talk, you'll head straight for the glacier peak in another gargantuan off-road vehicle. Once you arrive at the ice cave, your guide will take you inside the cavern, where you will have plenty of time to explore and take numerous pictures of this unique and natural wonder. Be sure to take in the views from outside the cave overlooking the many incredible peaks of Iceland on all sides and the bays of the south coast down below. After this, you will start to head back to your hotel in the Golden Circle.
For those who choose option 3, you'll head on your way towards Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Once there, you'll have plenty of time to take in this awe-inspiring location. Watch the magnificent gigantic blue icebergs move through the lagoon and out to sea. Cross the road to the glistening Diamond Beach and walk among some washed-up icebergs onshore afterward.
After this, you'll head back along route 1, taking in another perspective of this incredible journey, before reaching your hotel in ample time to freshen up before dinner.
You'll then complete the day with a delicious meal at your hotel before resting up for the night in preparation for your next day of adventure.
