Journey across Iceland’s remote Highlands on an Askja Caldera tour that captures the raw spirit of adventure. This 10 to 12-hour super jeep tour is perfect for adventurous travelers who want ot explore Iceland's gems that most visitors never reach.
Your journey takes place in a specially equipped 4x4 super jeep, designed to handle the rivers, gravel tracks, and rugged terrain. With an expert driver at the wheel, you can relax and enjoy the ride while learning about the area’s geology. Since the group size is limited to a small number of people, the experience feels more personal and allows you more space.
The super jeep tour begins with pickup from Lake Myvatn, where your guide greets you and sets the course for the Highlands. Soon, you’ll be driving across black lava fields, past towering mountains, and over glacial rivers.
Your first stop is Hrossaborg Crater, sometimes called the Horse Fortress. The crater is so striking that it was used as a filming location for the movie “Oblivion.” Standing here, with the barren crater walls surrounding you, feels like stepping into a sci-fi set.
Next, you’ll continue to Gljufrarstigur, a viewpoint overlooking the powerful Jokulsa a Fjollum River. Here, the sound of rushing water fills the air as you admire the jagged cliffs and lush green slopes. The short walk to the viewing deck is easy, and once there, you’ll be rewarded with wide views across the canyon.
The road then brings you to Mt. Herdubreid, a flat-topped volcano often called the “Queen of Icelandic Mountains.” Its unusual shape and size make it one of the most photogenic peaks in the country.
At its base, you’ll visit Herdubreidarlindir Springs, a hidden oasis in the wilderness where clear water flows out into a patch of green. After hours of seeing black lava and barren land, this stop feels refreshing and almost magical.
From there, the super jeep tour leads you to Drekagil Canyon, also known as Dragon’s Gully. NASA even used this area to conduct research for their Mars missions because of how similar the terrain is to the Red Planet. Walking here feels otherworldly and is sure to be a highlight of the journey.
Finally, you’ll reach Askja Caldera itself. The star attraction here is Viti Crater, a geothermal lake formed after an eruption in 1875. On certain days, conditions allow for swimming, and if the rangers give the go-ahead, you’ll have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to take a dip in warm volcanic waters inside a crater.
Even if swimming isn’t possible, standing on the edge of Viti and looking down at the turquoise water is an unforgettable experience.
Then, it’s time to begin the journey back to Lake Myvatn. As the super jeep retraces its route through rivers and lava fields, you’ll have time to relax, swap photos, and reflect on the incredible places you’ve just explored.
