Description

Set off on a small-group tour from Breiddalsvik and explore East Iceland’s waterfalls, black sand beaches, fjords, and cultural landmarks. This guided experience is ideal for travelers eager to visit coastal villages, abandoned farms, and rural churches, with a stop at a museum of your choice.

The tour starts in Breiddalsvik, but you have the option to book pickup from the towns of Egilsstadir, Faskrudsfjordur, Stodvarfjordur, and Reydarfjordur. You’ll travel in a 4x4 super jeep with an experienced English-speaking guide and a small group of travelers.

After leaving town, you’ll follow the coastline toward the Stodvarfjordur Fjord. Along the way, stop at a high cliff with views of the Atlantic Ocean, steep shorelines, and surrounding mountains.

The drive continues toward Faskrudsfjordur Fjord with a stop at Hafnarnes Lighthouse, a coastal landmark at the end of the peninsula. This area was once home to a fishing village, and the remains of old houses can still be seen.

From the lighthouse, you can look out toward Skrudur Island. The island is known for its seabird colonies, and a local legend about a troll said to live on the cliffs.

Your guide will drive next into Reydarfjordur, a long fjord surrounded by high mountains. On the way, you’ll stop at a small canyon, a quiet viewpoint that allows for photo opportunities and a short leg stretch before continuing the journey.

After the canyon stop, you’ll travel across the Breiddalsheidi Mountain pass, returning to Breiddalsvik along a scenic circular route. This part of the drive includes a preserved 100-year-old road beside the current one, giving you a glimpse into Iceland’s early transport history.

Next is Jorvik, where you’ll explore a cluster of abandoned farms that reflect how rural Icelanders lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Set in a geologically active area shaped by volcanic forces, the site is also known for its colorful summer flora.

From there, continue to Flogufoss Waterfall, where water flows from the cliffs above and drops into a narrow valley. The falls are surrounded by basalt formations and are a scenic stop for nature lovers and photographers.

To round out the adventure, you’ll follow rough trails to reach Beljandi Waterfall. The route crosses a shallow river below the falls at a natural crossing point and adds a fun, memorable part to this off-the-beaten-path experience.

Continue your journey to Heydalir Church, a small countryside church surrounded by open fields and quiet fjord landscapes. Built in traditional Icelandic style, it reflects rural life and the role of churches in isolated communities.

The tour ends with a visit to Meleyri, a black sand beach just outside Breiddalsvik. This coastal area is a popular spot among locals for walking, birdwatching, and enjoying views of the nearby mountains and ocean.

After the stop, your driver-guide will return you to Breiddalsvik, where the tour concludes.

Please note that the museum stop is not listed in this itinerary, as the visit depends on your pickup location and the selected museum for the day. Possible stops include Petra’s Stone Collection, the French Museum, the East Iceland Geology Center, the Icelandic Wartime Museum (summer), or the Aurora Iceland Northern Light Exhibition (summer).
