Summary
Description
Discover one of Iceland's most captivating areas, rich in natural beauty and history, on this thrilling Lake Myvatn and Godafoss small group tour from Husavik port. This six-hour adventure takes cruise ship travelers to various must-see attractions in North Iceland.
The action begins when a driver picks you up in Husavik port. You'll then ride a spacious, comfortable minibus that accommodates up to 15 passengers. The driver will take the route south of Husavik and cross the Bardardalur valley fjord. From there, you'll enjoy the beautiful views of the town, the surrounding mountains, and the ocean.
You’ll then arrive at the beautiful Lake Myvatn, which is surrounded by many awe-inspiring attractions. Measuring nearly six miles (9.5 kilometers) wide and covering 14 square miles (37 square kilometers) or area, Lake Myvatn is home to Iceland’s fourth-largest lake.
Many other smaller lakes surround it.
Your first destination in the area is Godafoss waterfall. Also called "Waterfall of the Gods," Godafoss is one of Iceland's most spectacular and historically significant waterfalls. Spanning approximately 98 feet (30 meters) in width and dropping 39 feet (12 meters), Godafoss waterfall is known for cascading over a horseshoe-shaped cliff down into a turquoise pool below.
Apart from its beauty, Godafoss waterfall is connected to Iceland's conversion to Christianity. Legend says that Godafoss was where Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi, a local chieftain and law speaker, threw his statues of Norse gods into the waterfall, symbolizing the country's conversion.
Next, you'll head toward the Lake Myvatn area to see the fascinating Skutustadagigar pseudocraters. Dating back approximately 2,300 years, the Skutustadagigar pseudocraters were formed when hot lava flows over wetlands or lakes, causing steam explosions.
As you explore the area, you'll see the pseudocraters in various shapes and sizes. You'll also notice the lush vegetation around the area if you visit during warmer months. Well-maintained walking paths that wind through the area offer excellent viewpoints of the craters and the surrounding landscape.
Your next stop is the Dimmuborgir lava fields, another geothermal attraction in the Lake Myvatn area. Translated "Dark Castles" in Icelandic, Dimmuborgir was formed over 2,300 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The area features unusual lava formations resembling castles, towers, and other fantastical shapes.
After enjoying the Dimmuborgir lava fields, the driver will take you to the underground river in the Grjotagja lava cave. Considered a hidden gem, Grjotagja cave is known for its stunning geothermal hot spring. The cave is formed from volcanic activity, with fissures and openings revealing the geothermal spring below.
However, the water is no longer safe for bathing because of its fluctuating temperatures. Still, it is a must-see attraction, especially since it gained recent popularity as a filming location for the "Game of Thrones" TV series.
Your final stop in the Lake Myvatn area is the Hverir geothermal area. Known for its incredible landscapes, Hverir features bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and mineral deposits. Expect to see vibrant colors like yellow, green, orange, and deep red around the area.
This tour also comes with a stop at the Myvatn Nature and Heritage Museum, where you'll enjoy a light lunch. At the end of an adventure-filled day, the driver will take you back to the Husavik port right before your ship's departure.
