Description
Take part in a thrilling day of discovery featuring some of Iceland's most fascinating natural wonders on this Lake Myvatn day tour. This five-hour adventure takes travelers to the Lake Myvatn region to see geological formations, mud pools, and tectonic plates before soaking in the Myvatn Nature Baths.
The action begins when you meet a friendly local guide at Lake Myvatn. You'll then ride a spacious, comfortable vehicle enough to fit the whole family. With your guide's experience, they can efficiently navigate the Lake Myvatn area, taking you to its must-see attractions.
Lake Myvatn is a shallow lake known for its unique landscape, diverse birdlife, and geothermal activity. Formed around 2,300 years ago by a volcanic eruption, Lake Myvatn is surrounded by dramatic lava fields, hot springs, and craters. With Myvatn's abundant birdlife, it is hailed as one of Europe's best bird-watching locations.
Your first stop for the day is the fascinating Skutustadagigar pseudocraters. Unlike traditional volcanic craters, pseudocraters are formed when hot lava flows over wetland areas, causing steam explosions that create crater-like depressions. While resembling volcanic craters, these formations are not connected to any magma activity beneath the surface, making them a rare and intriguing feature in the landscape.
The Skutustadagigar pseudocraters were created around 2,300 years ago during volcanic activity in the region. As you marvel at their unique appearance, you'll notice the lush vegetation, gentle hills, and panoramic views of the lake and nearby mountains.
Next, you'll head to Dimmuborgir, a lava field known for its striking landscapes and rock formations. The name "Dimmuborgir" translates to "Dark Castles," which perfectly captures the area's eerie appearance.
Dimmuborgir was created when lava flowed over a wetland, causing the boiling water to bubble through the molten rock. As the lava cooled, it solidified into dramatic pillars, caves, and arches. In turn, you'll see rock formations that look like ruins of an old castle or fortress.
Next, your guide will take you to the Namafjall geothermal area to see various boiling mud pots and smoking fumaroles. Also called Hverir, the Namafjall geothermal area is located at the base of Namafjall mountain. As you explore the area, you'll notice its Martian-like landscape, where the earth constantly hisses and bubbles due to the geothermal activity beneath the surface.
In addition, you'll see the ground's vivid colors featuring yellow, red, and brown hues created by the sulfur and other minerals rising from below.
After enjoying the geothermal wonders of Hverir, you'll visit the Grjotagja rift, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Also in the area is the Grjotagja cave, known for its hot spring with crystal-clear blue waters.
Before returning to Lake Myvatn, you can visit the Myvatn Nature Baths and experience the soothing effects of its geothermal waters. Often compared to the famous Blue Lagoon in the Southwest, the Myvatn Nature Baths are a more peaceful alternative.
The Myvatn Nature Baths feature naturally heated waters sourced from nearby geothermal springs rich in minerals like silica and sulfur. These minerals are known for their therapeutic properties.
At the end of the tour, the guide will take you back to the starting point in Lake Myvatn. Alternatively, you can arrange a drop-off at your hotel if you're staying in Akureyri.
Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to discover the wonders of the Lake Myvatn area. Check availability now by choosing a date.
