Description
Summary
Description
Experience an unforgettable adventure in North Iceland with this sightseeing tour that takes you to the breathtaking Lake Myvatn and the majestic Godafoss waterfall. Those keen on seeing unique geological formations and geothermal areas will enjoy this private tour's itinerary.
Your five-hour excursion will start in the picturesque town of Akureyri, where you'll meet your guide. You can select to be picked up from your accommodation, the airport, or any preferred location within the town. A private vehicle suited for the terrain of the northern region will take your private party to some of Iceland's best attractions.
En route to your first destination, you'll travel along the beautiful coast of Eyjafjordur, one of Iceland's longest fjords. The bay is surrounded by towering mountains, providing an excellent introduction to Iceland's stunning nature.
The first destination on your tour is the Godafoss waterfall, also known as the "waterfall of the gods." Here, you can witness the magnificent waters dropping from a 39-foot (12-meter) cliff while learning about the attraction's rich folklore and history from your guide.
Lake Myvatn, located about 43 miles (70 kilometers) from Akureyri, is the tour's highlight. The lake, the fourth-largest in Iceland, covers a massive area of 14 square miles (37 square kilometers).
Some of the most notable features of the Myvatn area are its pseudocraters and volcanic pillars called Skutustadagigar or Skutustadir. The craters range from a few meters to several hundred meters in diameter and are surrounded by lush vegetation.
These pseudocraters and other islands in the lake support as many as 13 nesting species of birds and ducks, especially in the spring and summer months. With luck and the right weather conditions, you can spot some of them during your trip, including the white-eyed diver and gadwall.
Next to see are the Dimmuborgir lava fields and the Grjotagja cave, also located by the banks of Lake Myvatn.
Dimmuborgir is a large lava field with bizarre rock formations created by the cooling and hardening of molten lava. The attraction is also known as the "black fortress" or "dark castle" because of its towering pillars and arches.
Meanwhile, the Grjotagja cave is another unique geological feature formed thousands of years ago by a volcanic eruption. The cave is famous for its warm water, heated by a nearby volcanic fissure. Although the attraction isn't suitable for swimming, it's a popular tourist destination after being featured in the TV series Game of Thrones.
The last stops on your itinerary are the Hverarond fields and Namaskard pass, a geothermally active area boasting hot springs, mud pots, pools, and fumaroles. This otherworldly landscape showcases Iceland's raw, awe-inspiring nature.
After a great day exploring the Myvatn area, you'll return to Akureyri. With time permitting, you can request photo stops along the way because this tour is private.
