Top things to do in Iceland
Book your complete trip with the best companies only
Don’t be left with nothing to do on a winter night in Iceland, by booking this Northern Lights cruise that guarantees a back-up tour if the weather is unfavourable. This is the perfect way to make sure you won’t be disappointed by a planned night in Reykjavík.
All going to plan, you will take the tour detailed below, but in case of bad weather, you will instead go for a guided tour to the Whale of Iceland Exhibition by the harbour. This fantastic museum has life-sized models of all 23 whale and dolphin species seen around Iceland. You’ll get a complimentary drink, and, of course, a ticket to try northern lights hunting another night.
If the sky is clear and the forecast good, however, you’ll board a ship at the same harbour, and set off onto Faxaflói Bay. As the sky darkens, you’ll keep your eyes peeled for any sign of the incredible, ethereal aurora borealis.
When they start to descend, you’ll be in awe of their surreal beauty. Greens, purples, and a range of other colours swirl and dance amongst a canopy of stars like something from another world. The sea is one of the best places to watch nature’s greatest show, as the only light pollution will be from the distant city lights of Reykjavík.
While you wait for the lights (or after them), you are welcome to stay warm indoors on the boat; there is a large, heated cabin with comfortable seats, complete with restrooms and a cafe.
After two hours, hopefully, complete with a fantastic show, you’ll be returned to Reykjavík’s harbour. If you were not lucky enough to see the auroras, you will get a ticket to try again.
Witness the Northern Lights, or visit a fantastic museum and try again the next night, with this flexible tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
