Join a small group of fellow adventurers on this thrilling 9-hour tour of the Diamond Circle from Akureyri, featuring many of the country's most famous attractions. Travelers who want to explore Iceland's north will enjoy the treasures of this geothermal region and its many incredible waterfalls.
Your group will depart from Akureyri with an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide. Having a small group will ensure that your trip doesn't get too crowded. Once ready, you'll make the drive from Eyjafjordur, Iceland's longest fjord, towards your breathtaking destinations.
You'll first stop at the Godafoss waterfall. Also known as 'the Waterfall of the Gods,' this stunning natural wonder is part of the Skjalfandafljot river and has a fascinating role in Iceland's history.
You'll also stop by the Dettifoss waterfall, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The force of its cascade is awe-inspiring, as is the fall of the Selfoss waterfall, which also flows nearby.
Once you arrive at Lake Myvatn, you'll be greeted by serene waters, small islands, and abundant birdlife.
The lake is also home to the bizarre and dramatic Skutustadagigar pseudocraters. An eruption caused lava to flow over the area's wet swamplands, creating these unique and unusual formations.
Eruptions also created the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, a dramatic fortress of jagged rock with fascinating associated folklore.
In nearby Mount Namafjall, you'll find the Hverir mud pools and the steam vents of Namaskard. The area is very barren, but the sulfur in the ground causes vivid streaks of color to decorate the earth and gives off a very distinctive smell.
You'll also find the Grotagja rift in the area, which is part of the rift between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates. This area is home to the Grotagja geothermal cave, an old bathing spot and a Game of Thrones shooting site.
Another exciting place to visit is Hofdi, a filming location for Game of Thrones and Star Wars.
After seeing the sights, you can relax at the geothermal lagoon of the Myvatn Nature Baths. The mineral-rich waters are a milky blue, and the area contains a restaurant for when you need to grab a bite.
Once you finish, you'll head back to Akureyri with the rest of the group.
