Description

Experience one of the most exhilarating winter adventures in Iceland by booking this private zipline and ice caving tour from Hofn. This six-hour tour takes you to Vatnajokull, Iceland's largest glacier, to visit a marvelous ice cave before riding a zipline across one of its outlet glaciers.

The day begins when a friendly and experienced guide meets you at the glacier lagoon parking lot inside the Vatnajokull National Park. From there, you'll ride a 4x4 vehicle toward the parking lot of the majestic Vatnajokull glacier. As you pass through a bumpy F-road, your guide will give you a brief history of the glacier.

The Vatnajokull glacier covers approximately 3,127 square miles (8,100 square kilometers), which is about eight percent of Iceland's landmass. This massive ice cap also sits atop several active volcanoes, adding to its dynamic nature.

Deep within its icy mass are hidden volcanic peaks, creating an unbelievable landscape of ice caves, crevasses, and rugged terrain. Vatnajokull's glacier tongues extend outwards, shaping the surrounding landscape.

Once you reach the glacier parking lot, your guide will give you all the necessary equipment for the hike to the ice cave. The guide will give you an ice axe, a helmet with a headlamp, a harness, and crampons. You also have the option to rent a pair of hiking boots.

The hike toward the foot of Vatnajokull glacier takes about 30 minutes. However, the route is relatively easy since you'll walk on mostly flat ground with a few rocky spots. As this is a private tour, you can adjust the hike's pace to your liking, allowing you to enjoy the scenic views and surroundings as hike.

Upon reaching the glacier's foot, you'll see the huge crystal ice cave. This impressive ice cavern features a river underneath. Interestingly, the crystal ice cave changes its shape, size, and location as it melts away, particularly during summer. Guests will enjoy a unique experience each time they visit the crystal ice cave.

Before entering the cave, you'll first wear your crampons and other safety gear. Your guide will then instruct you about the safety measures and other important reminders for navigating the ice cave. This is also the best time to ask any questions you may have.

As you enter the ice cave, crystal blue ice walls will welcome you. You'll explore multiple chambers as you go deeper into the cave. As you reach specific locations, the photographer will take pictures to immortalize your time inside the ice cave.

Furthermore, the guide will talk about the cave, its history, and composition, among other things.

After an hour of exploring the crystal ice cave, you'll hike towards the Breidamerkurjokull glacier for the glacier zipline. With the help of your crampons, you'll walk along the glacier until you reach the moulin, a crevice carved by meltwater that extends to the glacier's surface. The moulin's area is where the zipline action takes place.

Be sure to enjoy the breathtaking views, the sight of the deep glacial holes below, and the thrilling ride as you shoot down the zipline.

After an action-packed time at Breidamerkurjokull glacier, you'll hike back to the glacier parking lot before riding the 4x4 for the trip back to the glacier lagoon inside the Vatnajokull National Park.

Don't miss this chance to explore a crystal ice cave and ride a zipline across glacial crevices in this exhilarating six-hour adventure from Hofn. Check availability now by choosing a date.
