Description

Join a Studlagil Canyon tour by super jeep and travel deep into the valleys of East Iceland, where towering basalt walls frame one of the country’s most unique landscapes. This small-group adventure is ideal for travelers who want both comfort and discovery, combining a scenic ride through remote terrain with a gentle hike that brings you up close to the dramatic canyon views.

Designed as a shore excursion, this 6-hour tour makes it easy to step off your ship and head straight into Iceland’s landscapes without worrying about logistics. Traveling in a small group ensures a more personal experience. You’ll enjoy plenty of space to enjoy the ride, ask questions, and take in the magnificent views of Studlagil Canyon at a comfortable pace.

Your Studlagil Canyon tour begins at Seydisfjordur Port, where you board a super jeep built for Iceland’s rugged highland roads. From the harbor, the drive climbs over mountain passes and opens into sweeping views of East Iceland’s valleys and distant ridges.

Your first stop is Rjukandi Waterfall, one of the tallest in East Iceland at about 305 feet (93 meters). The water splits into two streams as it drops down the cliff, creating a loud roar and a mist that sometimes shows tiny rainbows in the sunlight.

From Jokuldalur Valley, the hike to Studlagil Canyon begins on an easy path about 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers). As you walk, the landscape changes from open fields to cliffs, and the river grows louder until the canyon comes into view.

Once hidden beneath glacial waters, Studlagil was revealed in 2009 when a hydroelectric project lowered the river and uncovered its dramatic walls. What emerged was the largest collection of basalt columns in Iceland, rising in perfect symmetry above the valley floor.

The canyon’s appearance changes with the seasons. In spring and early summer, the river often glows a vivid blue. Meanwhile, from late summer into autumn, it turns silty gray from glacial melt, giving the scene a wilder, more rugged look.

On arrival, you can climb down for a closer look at the towering cliffs or stay above for sweeping views across the valley. From either perspective, it is easy to see why Studlagil has quickly become one of the most unforgettable sights in East Iceland.

After time to explore and take photos, you hike back through the valley and return to the super jeep. The drive then carries you back over the mountains to Seydisfjordur, ending the day with memories of one of East Iceland’s most unforgettable sights.

Experience the beauty of East Iceland on a Studlagil Canyon tour by super jeep with a guided hike that combines comfort and adventure. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Good to know

The river at Studlagil Canyon is bright blue in early summer but often turns grey-brown when water is released from the hydroelectric dam, most commonly between August and October.

Conditions in East Iceland can also be unpredictable, which may lead to changes in the route or longer travel times.

The hike itself is easy, but good shoes are important, and the short descent to the canyon floor requires care.

Since there are no facilities along the trail, bringing water and a light snack is recommended.
