Jump aboard this captivating tour to the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Sometimes called ‘Iceland in Miniature’ due to its vast diversity of landscapes, this is the perfect trip for those who seek to capture the true spirit and beauty of this incredible island. This is a small-group minibus tour for a maximum of 19 people, allowing for a comfortable and personal experience.

You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík in the morning, then head north-west. While the immediate surrounding scenery will be of rolling farmlands, it will diversify as soon as you reach the peninsula. You will cruise between the beautiful, rocky coast and a long range of mountains to your first destination: the Snæfellsjökull subglacial volcano.

Often called ‘the crown jewel of the peninsula’, Snæfellsjökull is a magnificent, cone-shaped volcano adorned with ice throughout the year. Its beauty has inspired writers and artists for centuries, most notably Jules Verne; his novel ‘A Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ is set here.

After admiring this incredible natural landmark, you will head to the charming farm of Ytri-Tunga to see its resident seal colony. These creatures, which spend hours hauling out on the shore, are a pleasure to observe, as they lazily sun themselves with little concern for those observing them. Animal-lovers would do well to keep an eye on the ocean around here too, as Snæfellsnes is one of the best places in the country to spot orcas from the shore.

You will next see the charming villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, which are said to be steeped in magic and folklore. They are located in a lovely coastal area, which is dotted with beautiful rock formations and dramatic cliffs.

The most notable of these geological formations are the two basalt columns called Lóndrangar, so tall and striking that many have compared them to a castle. Near these, you will have a chance to wander along a gorgeous black beach, Djúpalónssandur, the cliffs of which are home to many nesting seabirds.

At Djúpalónssandur, you’ll find a curiosity on the beach: four large, smooth stones. They are ‘lifting stones’, once used to measure the strength of fishermen who worked and lived along the coasts here. Your guide will tell you what each was called, and you can see how well you would have risen to the challenge of moving them.

Your final stop will be at the most photographed mountain in all of Iceland. Kirkjufell rises alone from a sea of green hills and wildflowers, surrounded by trickling rivers and little waterfalls; it is without a doubt one of the most scenic areas in the country. You’ll want to have your camera on hand when exploring this beautiful feature.

The Snæfellnes peninsula is one of the country’s most beautiful spots. Don’t miss your opportunity to see 'Iceland in Miniature'. Check availability by choosing a date.

A Worthy Thor Pick-up was prompt and, upon boarding the bus, we were surprised to hear that only us and another couple were on the tour! This made the tour far more personal, and allowed more time to see the sights and ask any questions we had. Our tour guide, Thor, was brilliant. He was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting and funny stories which kept us entertained throughout the day. His personal anecdotes also added to the personal feel of the tour. He indicated the best viewing points at each site very well, and would often walk around with us instead of just waiting on the bus. He was very well-informed about Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi, the fishing villages, Ytri Tunga, general Icelandic mythology and much more. Additionally, he took us to a restaurant called Sker for lunch, where he knew some of the staff personally and highly recommended their food. As there were only 5 of us altogether, we were able to eat at a table together, giving us a chance to chill out and chat for a bit. The food was also delicious. Although the weather was brutally windy and rainy, we enjoyed it immensely and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Iceland.

We had an absolutely wonderful time on our tour around Snaefekksness peninsula. First, we stopped at a wonderful plain that offered great view and spot for taking photos and we could even go behind a waterfall nearby. After that, we had a quick lunch at a local restaurant/library/community center where they had a bowl of great, fresh fish soup. W continued to Kirkjufjell mountain and nearby waterfall that offered another magnificent sight. We continued on the road around the glacier that was, sadly to shy and hid behind the clouds until we reached a wonderful beach of black pebbles and a troll (some think it's just a giant pillar of stone, but we know the truth). We continued to take a walk near Arnarstapi where we saw magnificent arches of stone by the coast occupied by countless pairs of seagulls. Our final stop was the Ytri-Tunga beach where we had most luck. The wind completely stopped, the sun was warming our faces and about 20 seals that were tanning on the stones. They were adorable :3 It is understandable why the peninsula is called Iceland in miniature. We saw so many natural wonders on such a concentrated place that it truly felt special. Big thanks to our guide (whose name I'm not sure how is spelled. I think Throstor. I'm really sorry) who was at the beginning a bit monotone, but shown so much knowledge and interest after being prodded with questions. The giant seal colony to which we probably came closer than we should have, was definitely the highlight and the entire trip was a wonderful experience. Highly recommended! :D

Our guide was very knowledgeable and shared all kinds of anecdotes about the places we visited. He was a very accomplished driver - this was important because the day we took the tour, it was icy, slushy and there was freezing rain by the ocean. Nonetheless, his eagerness in showing us the area kept us interested all the way and back.

I was extremely impressed with this tour and have nothing but amazing things to say. This part of Iceland is absolutely stunning and should not be missed if you have a few days to explore. Aside from the naturally occurring landscape, my guide (Thor) was the best. He shared some cool facts and funny stories along the way. Not to mention his amazing playlist and willingness to answer all of my questions. Thanks for an awesome trip, I will be back!
