The Different Displays of Skógafoss and its Legend
What appearance of Skógafoss do you prefer? The rainbow summerglow, the frozen beauty or maybe the artistic look of it or maybe you love it in black and white?
Skógafoss is the kind of waterfall that is really picturesque and it's easy and so much fun to play with the camera around it. The light is very different between seasons, even between weeks or days. You can always get a different look.
As some of you might know Skógafoss is located on the south coast of Iceland and is one of Iceland's biggest waterfall with a width of 25 metres and a drop of 60 m. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow that is normally visible on sunny days.
At the eastern side of the waterfall i.e. when you climb the stairs beside it and keep on with your walking, a hiking and trekking trail leads up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. That is of course another chapter but something I really recommend if you have plenty of time and if you are in a good hiking shape.
As with so many icelandic wonders we have a legend saying the first viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson (can you pronounce this funny name?), buried a treasure in a cave behind the Skógafoss waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. The ring was allegedly given to the local church but the treasure might be behind the fall still.
I'm not sure, I've never tried searching for it but who knows !?!
I personally love the frozen beauty of Skógafoss or the artistic look of it or the powerful look of it. Well I can't decide what look is the most beautiful. They all are in such a different way.
Have you been to Skógafoss and in what season did you visit? I would love to hear your opinion or see your pictures if you have photographed it.
Have you been to Skógafoss waterfall ?
