Hiking Laugavegur and Fimmvorduhals Trail in Iceland
If you like to walk long distances or do multi day hikes, love to challenge yourself or spend interesting time among new people, if you are interested in adventures in nature beyond belief you will want to do the Laugavegur Trek
It is one of the most impressive trails hidden in the Icelandic Highlands. Brimming with geological diversity, the Laugavegur Trek takes you through geothermal areas, between glaciers and volcanos, ryholite mountains and peaceful lakes. These mountains shaped by the erosion of volcanic activity, winds, ocean and glaciers. These are the kind of surroundings that will stir your imagination..
If you decide to travel on your own, it is important to be 100% sure that you are prepared for this adventure: physically and mentally and also with a proper equipment. There are no convenience stores nor hotels along the way. During the high season the only huts on the track are quickly fully booked. You will need to book it in advance or just carry your own tent. The camping fee is around 1000 ISK p/p. Chances of securing hut accommodation increases when travelling outside of the high season. These huts are not catered so regardless of the situation you will need to make sure you have brought your own food since the trek lasts 4-6 days (depending if you want to take on the Fimmvorduhals trail as well). If you want to reduce the load get some quality dry food, you can buy it in specialised stores. There is plenty of water in the camping sites, which is free and of good quality for drinking. In fact, Iceland has some of the cleanest drinking water in the whole world. About 1,5 l per day should be sufficient.
Going out on a trail you should always check on the weather forecast before. The weather in Iceland can change abruptly and the trek become extremely challenging if the conditions take a turn for the worst. This is especially valid on the second day where the trek travels along Hraftinnusker to Alftavatn Lake, and the visibility is extremely low. It is pertinent that you let the wardens know when you´re leaving.
If you want to hike comfortably and only with your day back pack on your shoulders I recommend you to contact one of the Icelandic trekking companies. They will drive your heavy luggage, assist you if needed and provide you with all necessary food supplies. You will travel in a group. Like the Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Laugavegur trail attracts interesting people from all over the world. Such companies also include the transport on the first and the last day; you will have your own guide, who will take care of you.
Be respectful and mindful when travelling. Keep in mind that safety is an important concern in all outdoor activities. Nature in Iceland is amazingly beautiful but also very fragile. We all have to respect it and protect. Don´t camp in non-designated areas or on the moss, it takes years for it to grow and even more to recover when damaged. Don´t litter and keep on trail. In this way you will love your trip and the trip will love you!
