When asked to pick the best trek in Landmannalaugar, most immediately think of the popular four-day Laugavegur Trail, arguably Iceland’s most famous. However, the roughly 6.1-mile (9.8-kilometer) Sudurnamur Hiking Trail presents the perfect one-day alternative for experiencing the region’s otherworldly beauty.

Before embarking on this moderately challenging trek to the peak of Sudurnamur Mountain, hikers should be aware that some initial portions can be quite steep and may be considered difficult depending on individual fitness. But ultimately, it’s worth the challenge.

Adventurers, you’re in for a visual feast as you traverse past a diverse collection of landscapes, through rocky terrain, glacial streams, pockets of vegetation, and rock formations. Even the slopes of Sudurnamur are worth a closer look, with the rhyolite rock painted in multi-colored shades by geothermal activity and weathering.

But the real showstopper sits at the summit. From the jaw-dropping Sudurnamur peak at the ridgeline, the breathtaking Landmannalaugar region unfolds. There’s the rugged expanse of the lava fields, and the dark, jagged peak of Blahnukur standing in stark contrast to the colorful slopes of Brennisteinsalda. In the distance, you can even see the stunning highlands of southern Iceland.
