Review of Auto Car Rental
Highly recommend. We had a 2019 Dacia Duster with 4x4 option, standard. Car handled great (although gutless in 5 or 6 going uphill). Put 3000 km or so on it over almost every type of road, not the interior F roads which were closed anyway. It handled it. Service and advice from staff were fantastic, warned how to avoid tickets, especially parking. Got the Parka app as suggested, can't recommend that enough. It works and it's easy.

Review of MYCAR
We required a hire car for a 1-month self-drive tour of Iceland, and we wanted to be able to go on F-Roads. We opted for a Toyota Yaris Cross 4x4 Hybrid that gave us the F-Road options as well as the fuel economy of the hybrid. It worked out perfectly for us. The MyCar staff were super helpful and friendly. We opted for the premium insurance and were glad that we did as it included an internet dongle that we used all the time. We got a rock chip in the windscreen, and a flat tyre repaired and this was all included under the insurance. After doing thee trip you realize how many things that can go wrong, so we were super glad that we took the insurance and had no worries. The car had a tyre repair kit including a compressor to reinflate the flat enough to get us to a repair shop which was great, We had a brilliant trip and the car was great and the MyCar service was superb. Pick up and drop off at Keflavik Airport was seamless.

Review of Blue Car Rental
Car was comfortable and just the right size for 4 adults with 2 bags each. Information on booking was incorrect....we were waiting for a shuttle and ended up walking to the Blue Car office, only to be told that the shuttle is no longer in service. Service personnel at check in very efficient.

Find a 4x4 or SUV, Iceland's most popular rental category. These cars offer extra safety on gravel, stability in Iceland's strong winds, room for luggage and gear, and the only legal access to Highland F-roads in summer.
Choose this category for the safety and stability most Iceland travelers want, for driving the full Ring Road, for a Highland trip, or for renting a car in the winter season between October and March.
Reasons to Rent a 4x4 or SUV in Iceland
A 4x4 is the only legal way to reach Iceland's F-roads, the mountain roads that open from late June to early September and lead into the Highlands. They take you to remote areas like Landmannalaugar nature reserve, Thorsmork valley, and Askja caldera.
On regular roads, four-wheel drive gives you better traction in winter, more stability against Iceland's crosswinds, and the cargo space for a long Ring Road trip.
Match the vehicle to your trip:
A compact 4x4 like the Suzuki Jimny or Dacia Duster 4x4 suits two travelers driving the Ring Road or Golden Circle in summer.
A mid-sized SUV like the Toyota RAV4 suits families or groups of four to five on the Ring Road year-round and easier F-roads.
A larger jeep, like the Toyota Land Cruiser, is the right call for Highland trips along bumpy mountain roads.
Automatic is the safer choice on gravel and in winter if you're not used to manual.
Off-road driving is illegal everywhere in Iceland, and fines are heavy.
Driving a 4x4 in Iceland
A 4x4 sits higher and weighs more than a compact car. It handles less responsively in tight turns and on sudden braking, so drive at moderate speeds and brake earlier than you would in a smaller car.
Three habits keep you safe:
Treat gravel like ice; it loses traction fast at speed.
Leave more room for braking on icy or snowy roads in winter.
A valid driver's license in the Latin alphabet, or an International Driving Permit alongside a non-Latin license
At least one year of driving experience
A credit card to confirm the booking
To meet the minimum age of 20 or 21 (varies by car)
Most rentals are free to modify or cancel up to 24 hours before pickup, with exact terms on each car's product page.
Summer (June to August) and the northern lights months (October to March) book out fastest, so reserve 2-3 months ahead if you can. For more guidance, see our best tips for renting a car in Iceland.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most popular 4WD vehicles and SUVs to rent in Iceland?
Popular smaller 4x4 rental cars include the Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny, which are ideal for couples or solo travelers.
For medium-sized options, the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage are favorites, offering comfort and space for families.
For more challenging trips, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a top choice for its performance on F-roads and in rough conditions.
Do I need a 4WD in Iceland?
Renting a 4WD vehicle or SUV in Iceland is highly recommended for safety and accessibility. In summer, a car with four-wheel drive is required to access Iceland's Highlands, where rough terrain and river crossings make regular vehicles unsuitable.
In winter (October to March), a 4WD is a safer option—whether you're driving on regular roads in Reykjavik or heading out to the countryside. This is due to the ever-changing nature of Icelandic weather, such as snowstorms or icy road conditions.
Always choose a vehicle that matches your itinerary and the season. For further advice, consult our guide to rental car sizes in Iceland.
What do I need to rent 4x4 or SUV's in Iceland?
Most 4x4 car rental agencies in Iceland have an age limit of between 18 and 21 years old, though it can be higher depending on the vehicle.
You'll need to have at least one year of driving experience and have a valid driver's license written in the Latin alphabet. Otherwise, you'll need an international driving permit.
What is included in my 4x4 rental in Iceland?
All cars come with unlimited mileage and CDW insurance, which is in line with the law in Iceland. The CDW insurance covers damages the renter might cause to other vehicles and items. It also compensates for harm to individuals but does not cover damages to the rental vehicle.
Some rental companies may include things like additional insurance and WiFi, so make sure to compare your options to find the best fit for your trip.
What types of insurance are included with my 4x4 or SUV rental in Iceland?
Rental cars in Iceland typically come with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance, as it's mandatory in Iceland. It covers damages to third-party vehicles or property in case of an accident. However, CDW insurance does not cover all damage to the rental vehicle itself.
Check your rental agreement for specific coverage details, as some companies may include additional insurance options.
What additional insurance can I get when renting a 4x4 or SUV in Iceland?
While CDW insurance is included, we recommend considering additional insurance options for extra protection when renting a car in Iceland:
1. Super CDW - A higher level of CDW that reduces your excess payment in case of damage.
2. Gravel Protection - Covers damage to the car's paint and windshield caused by gravel or stones, which is common on Iceland’s gravel roads.
3. Sand and Ash Protection - Protects against damage from sandstorms and volcanic ash, which is especially important for traveling in certain areas of Iceland, like the Southeast.
4. Theft Protection - Covers theft of the vehicle or its contents.
Is there insurance for driving on Iceland's F-roads?
While CDW insurance covers standard driving, driving on F-roads or Highland roads often requires a special agreement. Not all vehicles are insured for these roads, and damage caused while driving on F-roads could void your insurance. For example, damage from river crossings is usually not covered.
Can I add additional drivers to my 4x4 or SUV rental in Iceland?
Yes, most rental companies allow you to add additional drivers, sometimes for a fee. The additional drivers must meet the same requirements as the primary driver.
Can I rent GPS navigation or Wi-Fi devices with my 4WD or SUV rental?
Yes, GPS navigation and portable Wi-Fi devices are available as optional add-ons from most rental companies. Be sure to request them when booking to guarantee availability.
Can I rent child seats with my 4WD or SUV rental in Iceland?
Yes, most rental companies in Iceland offer child seats as optional extras for an additional fee. These should be requested in advance to ensure availability, especially during the peak travel season of summer.
Are 4WD vehicles suitable for driving year-round in Iceland?
Yes, vehicles with four-wheel drive are designed for all seasons. They provide better traction on snowy or icy roads in winter and handle gravel and uneven terrain during summer, making them ideal for exploring Iceland year-round.
What sort of cars are considered 4x4 or SUV’s?
Cars considered 4x4s or SUVs are designed with elevated ground clearance, offering better traction and handling on rough terrain like gravel roads or snow.
SUVs can be 4WD (four-wheel drive), AWD (all-wheel drive), or 2WD (two-wheel drive).
4x4 vehicles can also suit different situations, so make sure to compare your options carefully and choose a vehicle based on your travel needs.
Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle at the airport in Iceland?
Yes, many rental companies operate from Keflavik International Airport (KEF Airport) and Reykjavik Airport, making it convenient to start your trip immediately.
Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle in Reykjavik?
Yes, there are many Reykjavik car rentals available, so you can easily pick up a 4x4 vehicle in Iceland's capital. It's a convenient option if you’re staying in Reykjavik before starting your road trip.
Be sure to confirm the pick-up and drop-off locations when booking your vehicle.
Can I return my 4x4 or SUV rental to a different location in Iceland?
Yes, many rental companies in Iceland allow you to return your vehicle to a different location for an additional fee.
Can 4x4 vehicles drive on Iceland's F roads?
Yes, the only way to drive on Iceland's F roads is with a 4x4 vehicle. These roads lead to Iceland's remote Highlands and are only accessible during the height of summer. The F stands for "Fjall," the Icelandic word for mountain.
Are all 4x4 vehicles suitable for F-roads?
No, while 4WD capability is required for F-roads, not all 4x4 vehicles are equipped for the rough terrain, steep slopes, or river crossings in Iceland's Highlands.
Always verify your vehicle’s suitability and specifications before renting. Driving an unsuitable vehicle on F-roads can be dangerous and may void your insurance.
Can I drive around Iceland with a 4x4 car?
Yes, a 4x4 is an excellent choice for driving around Iceland, whether you're exploring popular routes like the Golden Circle and Ring Road or venturing into remote areas.
A 4x4 provides better traction and stability on Iceland’s varied terrain, including gravel roads, icy winter conditions, and challenging F-roads in the Highlands.
However, not all 4x4 vehicles are suitable for every road, so make sure your car can safely navigate the paths you want to explore.
Can I sleep in my rented 4x4 or SUV in Iceland?
Some SUVs and 4x4 vehicles are modified for camping and sleeping, but this must be stated in the rental agreement. Regular vehicles are not designed for overnight stays.
For the best experience, book a 4x4 vehicle with a rooftop tent, a popular camper rental choice.
What should I do in case of an emergency or breakdown while driving a rented 4WD or SUV in Iceland?
If you experience a breakdown, contact your rental agency immediately. Iceland’s emergency number is 112.
Also, regularly check the Safe Travel website for real-time road and weather updates. Keep a phone with good coverage and carry basic emergency supplies like water, snacks, a flashlight, and warm clothing.
What should I do if I accidentally damage the rental vehicle in Iceland?
Contact your rental company immediately to report the damage and follow their instructions. Refer to your rental agreement to understand your liability and coverage.
What should I do if my rented 4x4 or SUV breaks down on an F-road?
Contact your rental company immediately and provide your location. Be prepared for delays, as assistance may take longer in remote areas. In case of emergency, call 112, the Icelandic emergency number.
Do I need a 4WD in winter?
While not mandatory, we highly recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive vehicle if you travel to Iceland between October and March. Even if you stay on main roads, it’s safer than a smaller and lighter 2WD car.
Do jeep rental vehicles in Iceland have tire chains?
Your rental vehicle will not have tire chains. However, after November 1st, all rental vehicles in Iceland are provided with winter tires, and you can request studded tires, though this will depend on the car hire agency and availability.
Are fuel costs higher for 4x4 and SUV vehicles in Iceland?
Yes, fuel costs are generally higher for 4x4 and SUV vehicles due to their larger engines and greater fuel consumption. Keep this in mind when planning your trip.
How does fuel payment work at gas stations in Iceland?
Most gas stations in Iceland are self-service and usually require a credit or debit card with a PIN. You can also purchase prepaid fuel cards at some stations.
