China November lottery sales up 11%
Total November sales of official lottery products sold in mainland China rose 10.8% year-on-year to about 42.72 billion yuan ($6.2 billion), official data from China's finance ministry showed.
The growth recorded last month was supported by 23 billion yuan in sports lottery sales, which rose 20.1% year-on-year. Welfare lottery sales totaled 197.2 billion yuan, slightly up 1.6% year-on-year.
Total sales of the two lottery systems in the first 11 months of this year stood at 468.45 billion yuan, up 21.0% year-on-year. Welfare lottery sales rose 3.9% year-on-year to about 305.95 billion yuan, while sales of sports lottery products rose 38.7% to 264.5 billion yuan.
Sales rose in 24 of the 31 provinces and cities in mainland China that were approved for lottery sales in November. Guangdong remained the single-province market with the largest lottery sales in the first 11 months of 2018, with total lottery sales during the period reaching 44.55 billion yuan, up 16.4% year-on-year.
Guangdong followed, with total lottery sales of 36.88 billion yuan, up 21.4% from the previous year. Official data showed it came in third with lottery sales of nearly 34.27 billion yuan in the 11 months to Nov. 30, up 28.2% from the previous year.
In August, mainland Chinese authorities updated China's regulations on official lottery tickets. The update, which takes effect on Oct. 1, aims to reduce regulations for licensing lottery products offline, several experts conducting industry research told GGRAsia.
However, uncertainty remains over whether Chinese authorities will lift the suspension, which has been in place since 2015, regarding the online sale of official lottery products.
