Hwang Sun-hong breaks down China for two consecutive wins
It seems that the idea is to make all-out efforts to advance to the tournament early by making all-out efforts in the second round, taking advantage of the fact that rotation is difficult because there are players who are late to join.
South Korea's under-23 (U-23) national soccer team led by head coach Hwang Sun-hong will face China in the second Group B match of the 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics final Asian qualifying round at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar, at 10 p.m. on the 19th (Korea time).
In the first match of the group league against the United Arab Emirates, Hwang scored a new 1-0 victory thanks to Lee Young-joon's first goal scored during extra time in the second half. Korea elevated the mood by winning the first match where Hwang stressed the importance of the team.
It is important to continue this momentum until the next match, the match against China. In the first match against Japan, China lost the match despite Japan's numerical advantage due to its early exit, but started the match in the opposite direction to Korea.
It is a golden opportunity for Korea. If Korea secures three more points by winning two consecutive games against China, it could clinch an early advance to the quarterfinals depending on the match between Japan and the UAE. If Japan catches or ties with the UAE in the next match after Korea wins, Korea will be able to advance to the quarterfinals. In a competition hosted by AFC, if two or more teams have the same points, the winner is given priority, not the difference, so it is necessary to secure a win whenever there is an opportunity.
Initially, it was expected that Korea would operate the rotation in the match against China to some extent. In the long run, managing the players' physical strength is not an option but a must, and if Korea wants to win the pride fight in the third game against Japan, which is its "eternal rival," it could have operated a partial rotation in the match against China and some of its best players will play in the match against Japan.
The possibility of rotation against China was also expected in terms of Hwang Sun-hong's perfect victory at the Hangzhou Asian Games in September last year with a fantastic rotation operation.
However, the situation did not follow. Coach Hwang Seon-hong said that it would be difficult to operate the rotation due to players who joined the team late, adding that he would rather pour everything into the match against China. Unlike the Asian Games, only two teams ranking first and second in each group can advance to the quarterfinals, and hence the national team needs a strategy to secure victory over China.
Coach Hwang Sun-hong said in an interview at the Alersal Training Center in Doha, Qatar on the 17th (Korea Standard Time), "It's a shame that there are difficulties in the rotation because there are players who joined late."
"However, I believe we must wage an all-out war. Due to the nature of the event, players can face difficulties if they make a mistake, so I think we need to seize the opportunity when the opportunity arises. It is difficult for players as well, but we have told them that we need to wage an all-out war, and we intend to do so," Hwang said, vowing to win his second consecutive victory.
Hwang is also somewhat ready for the match. Hwang watched the first half of the match between China and Japan at the site, and made efforts to beat China by analyzing the matches China played during its training camp.
"I watched all the exhibition matches China had in Doha during its off-season training," Hwang said. "We need to be fully prepared. (Chinese soccer) has advanced more than before. I think we also need to be more vigilant against China than before."
